I am considering replacing the HDD with an SSD. Anybody know if I need the 7mm, or is the 9.5mm thickness ok?

You need a 9.5...

Also, for those wanting to put a 1TB 2.5" hard drive in there that are 12.5mm thick, they might fit. You have to move the rubber support that goes in with the hard drive.
Do I recommend it? Not really
But is it possible? Maybe Yes
If I would need the storgae, I would put a SSD in the ultrabay for the Operating System and programs, and the 1TB hd in the regular bay.
Just an idea

The 12.5 mm thick hard drive that I used did not fit, so others probably won't fit. I wouldn't recommend it. Just get a external enclosure or ultrabay hard drive and use that for storage. Use the SSD in the regular bay.

Its more than an idea. Many people are doing this already. However you got the order mixed up. Should be SSD in the regular bay.
T400 hdd height... 9.5mm or 7mm?
