When music is quiet there is a very audible static sound when listening through the headphone jack. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Any guess about what the cause might be?

Low quality source with your sensitive headphones :)? I have noise with my Etymotic Er-4p (on my x200).

I did not have that problem on my Asus.

Perhaps this is the tradeoff with getting a business machine instead of a multimedia focused computer?

I have never heard a laptop with decent audio... Get a USB soundcard/amp. I have an M-Audio MobilePre for audio capture/playback.

My Westone 3s pick up a TON of hiss.

Indeed, I second an external dac/soundcard if you are getting noise. I use an emu 0404 usb as my primary source.

It is the noise from your sound card. You get the hiss from other electronic noise on the motherboard leaking into your sound card. The hiss sometimes occur on external amplifiers as well. Plus some monitors/headphones are extremely sensitive and pick up hiss.

The lower the headphone impedance, the more the hiss.

16 Ohm Sonys will have more hiss than 600 ohm Beyerdynamics

I'm using Sennheiser CX 300s. Is it worth getting a PCMCIA or USB sound card?

I also have the JBL "On Tour" portable speakers.

I have a T61p and when hooked up to a Denon 3806 using line out, I hear no hiss. My speakers would be very sensitive to hiss as the Denon is powering some Monitor Audio Silver RSs.
