    T400 is very weird..

    i got my T400 recently.. and its always busy
    for the first like.. 5-10 minutes of every start up.. it just keeps ticking (the busy noise).. what the heck?

    There must be a lot of processes that start on boot into the OS.

    Yes, that, and Vista's SuperFetch (hopefully got the name right) spends the minutes after boot caching files you frequently access into memory, so other stuff will be faster later on.

    It's normal.

    it's indexing your drive. it will finish after a few days or so and everything will be just fine

    The standard advice is NOT to power off your Vista machine. Go into hibernate or sleep mode. The power off button in the Start menu is I believe by default set to go to sleep in your Thinkpad preload.
