So...the girlfriend and her friend are drinking wine and watching snl video clips on my 2 month old T400. Well, they failed to notice the candle behind it which burned a hole through the display cover (the top of the machine when its closed). Aside from the 1"x2" burn hole, I'm noticing a faint dark cloud coming through on the screen where the burn is. Lenovo says $300-600 just to fix the cover- we didn't even talk about replacing the whole display and I can only imagine what they'd charge for that.

    This sucks. Any suggestions?

Giant Sticker or duct tape over the burn hole!

You probably are going to have to replace the cover though, or at least the panel (you should be able to get these off eBay for a decent price). I assume you didn't get the accidental damage plan.

no accidental coverage. I guess I'll have to live with the screen but that would be nice to find a cover replacement on ebay. It almost seems like its glued on though. It might be something of an experiment changing it.

Here is a site to find the FRU for your T400 LCD bezel/cover assembly:
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-70425.html

For the regular (non-LED) LCD cover kit: FRU 43Y9637
For the LED backlight LCD cover kit: FRU 43Y9638

Refer to the diagram on the IBM website to determine which parts you need.
You can "Purchase parts online" at the bottom of the IBM website I linked ($36).

Lenovo uses some sort of double-sided adhesive/tape to connect the LCD cover/bezel assembly, in addition to plastic tabs, and screws. The screws are accessed from the bezel side under the rubber cushions and plastic circles.

hey pacman, thanks, you just saved me from ordering the wrong part #. Also, thanks for the replacement tips- I'm a little sketched out about taking the display apart.

That's wives you're talking about. GFs stubbornly refusing to shoulder responsibility get dumped here.
Unless they come with fringe benefits, that is.. :D

No problem. :) Also here is a link to the hardware maintenance manual for the T400: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-70069.html

Make sure you have really good precision screwdrivers. Some of the screws are really tight and cheap screwdrivers will give you fits. The plastic circles on the bezel are kind of tricky to get out (without breaking). You might have to order new ones if you do break them.

If you are only going to replace the LCD cover, you just have to unscrew the LCD bezel, carefully remove the cover from the bezel (pay attention to the plastic tabs), replace with the new cover, and then work backwards.

Replacing the LCD is a more painstaking process as you have to unscrew a few more parts and separate the hinge and display from the base. It is annoying. :p

    Good luck on the repairs.
