I installed vista x64 and got the swichable graphics installed and everything.

vista experiance index is as follows:

    ATI video card:
Graphics ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series 3.3
Gaming graphics 996 MB Total available graphics memory 3.7

    intel graphics:
Graphics Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family 3.8
Gaming graphics 772 MB Total available graphics memory 3.7

as you can see the ATI has less score than intel graphics, can anyone tell me what is a possible reason for this?

you don't have the right driver for ATI installed. don't ask me where to get it, I'd have to conduct a search same as you, so you do it

the right number outghtta be ~4.6

    Thanks for the reply.
All what I did is installing the switchable graphics driver for T400 from lenovo website. if I installed the wrong driver this means that lenovo is providing the wrong driver.
I tried to install the driver through windows updates, it was installed with a very slight improvement in vista score.
    any suggestions.

I used this guide, and installed the drivers in that order and all works perfectly.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=294974

    Direct link to ATI driver:
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-70417

Make sure you are not installing the intel video driver at all. The ATI will install it for you.

You have to make sure you dont install the drivers in switchable graphics mode in BIOS, you are going to have to set it to discrete, install the ATI, then restart, put it in integrated, Windows will auto recognize and install those drivers, then restart and put it in switchable mode in BIOS.

    Hope this helps.

I did this and installed the same driver. I guess the problem in because of vista x64.
can anyone with vista x64 on his machine provide us with windows experiance index for ATI graphics?

I have Vista Business x64 on a T400. ATI graphics results in a 4.6 for Aero and a 4.7 for games. Intel graphics results in lower scores for both Aero and games.

I would try to uninstall the Lenovo-provided ATI drivers, reboot, and then reinstall the Lenovo-provided ATI graphics drivers.

When running the High Performance Graphics (ATI), update your WEI score. You should get 4.6 for Aero and 4.6 for the baseline score.

Thank you for the information I tried that several times. Also I ran pc-doctor to diagnose the video card, the results are good. I called lenovo they asked me to format and install vista home that I received with the computer which is not a feasible option. dont know what to do next.

I would not lose sleep over a number that Vista spits out. If the laptop is working well with no freezes or slow performance, then I couldn't care less what my experience index is.

no offense, elfroggo, but I wholeheartedly disagree

    the hardware oughtta report 4.6
it is either a driver issue
    or it's a hardware issue

I'd fix it right away same as I'd fix a car making weird noises. The low number is the indication of something not right.

I dont think it is a hardware problem, I put back the original hard disk that I received with the computer (it has everything installed by lenovo) and I got a performance index of 4.6. I think this is a proof that the issue is a software issue.
Is there some tool I can use to evaluate the performance of the video card?

Perhaps you need to also install updated Intel Chipset Software drivers.

3DMark is a benchmarking tool for games you can try. You can then compare your score against similar systems.

    Someone in a review got 2560 3DMarks in 3DMark06 with a HD 3470 and a P8600.
