As far as I can tell it is random. It just did it three times in a row with a couple seconds in between.

Before the three in a row it would only do it once every couple of hours or so. I have not noticed a pattern or anything like that.

Anyone have any idea why my T400 would be making a chirping sound? I think it is coming from the right side of the computer, not positive though.

I've noticed this too. It's happened after a OS reinstall and the Intel storage matrix/sata driver hasn't yet been updated. Happens at post. What version is your storage controller driver?

How would I find out what version my storage controller driver is? The chirping seems to be more frequent. I am curious as to why it is chirping.

In my past experiences with the T400 and even my T510, chirping and even any kinds of noises I believe are from the hard drives. Thinkpads are made very silently otherwise but the hard drives always make really silly noises. Chances are it'll be a Hitachi or something if you haven't upgraded it.

On my t410i, the loudest sound come from the fan. It is louder than my R400 before.

I love my T400 but every since I had to replace the HDD after it died on me it has been chirping every now and again when plugged in. Seems to be chirping more and more now.

Any idea what it is and/or how to fix it?

What HDD do you have? Is it a continuous noise, or does it only occur during disk usage?

I have a Western Digital 320GB 7200 RPM HDD. The name is escaping me right now.

It only chirps when plugged in and when I am using my computer. So it probably has to due with usage.

Edit: Scorpio Black after a little search

IIRC, my 320GB Scorpio Black never made chirping noises... Check the SMART data?

    SMART data?

Yes, microphonics looks likely but is there any explanation for it only happening when plugged in?
