I just received my T400 30 minutes ago. Upon examination, I noticed
    1) there are 3 missing screws on the bottom.
    2) when I move my laptop around, I can hear some metal moving inside the laptop. Perhaps it's one of the missing screw?
    3) when I bootup the computer for the 1st time, it says some window start up error but the system works fine after i have it restart normally.

I am so pissed off as I've been waiting for this laptop for a long time. I don't know why they would send me a screwed up laptop like this. I was wondering if it's possible that the US custom somehow opened up my laptop for examination and didn't put things back right?

Should I exchange the laptop for a new one?

I'm not surprised? There's a law now where the US Customs can turn on laptops and go through your data and stuff. The whole works buddy...

Or it could just be Lenovo screwing up lol either way... call Lenovo up and at least it goes on record so you won't be penalized for someones mistake that's not yours.

If you can open the laptop... there's servicing videos on lenovo site

Why fool around with a notebook in the state you describe? Lenovo will quickly send you a new one and probably give you a discount if you ask for it.

I think that there are not supposed to be screws in the places you describe. Could you take a picture?

My T400 came with a little bag of screws(2). The only screw that wasn't installed is the one that locks the ultrabay. I haven't put one in yet, but probably will because I don't see myself swapping out with anything else.

Call Lenovo immediately and ask for an exchange. It could have been customs or the person who assembled it. I have found that the person who assembles the machine makes a big difference. My T61p for example does not have basically any of the build issues that many others have, such as bulges in odd locations. These bulges are many times caused by cables incorrectly routed in the machine.

BTW - Leave the machine off. If there is something metal rattling inside, it could short out something on the mainboard.

I believe they are screws for the keyboard. There are no where to be found plus I can hear things moving inside the laptop when I tilt it.

I've call lenovo and they are sending me ups shipping slip to send my laptop to their nearest repair center to take a look. I don't want to exchange it because 1) I got an LG and 2) I dont want to wait another 3 weeks.

The other screw should be able to replace the screw holding the hard drive cover and prevent it from being so easily accessed if you wished.

Have you searched the Lenovo site http://d03bphrb.partner.boulder.ibm.com/bpconnections/bpcms.nsf/PublicSPPartnerSearch?OpenFrameset&NL=en. That list the official lenovo warranty authorized service center. If you have one in your city you can just drop it off in the morning and ask them if they can check it out and pick it up later in the day. Thus decreasing turn around time and also any possible shipping hazards. In my city i have a couple... which will be awesome for any warranty work i have to do.
