After my HP Pavilion 2700t (my first laptop) of 3-months died, with minimal use at that, I became very, very skeptical of the build quality and, more importantly, general reliability of the current stock of laptops being made today.

With that said, and with some heavy research, I was told about the T400. Looking at the price to specs ratio, the T400 is rather impressive, but frustratingly, just like any other vendor, THEY DO NOT LIST THE DETAILS of certain components like RAM or HD.

The POS Toshiba harddrive that was in my 2700t died after a mere 3 months, with pretty much the "heavy duty" use of browsing the web and occasional MS Word use.

So for anyone that already owns a T400, what kind of PC3-8500 RAM and HD do they pack you with? Because if it's a less-than-stellar model, I think I'd just have to get a Seagate Momentus HD and some OCZ memory or something.

And out of curiosity, what DVDRW does it come with? I would like to look up if they have an RPC1 custom firmware for it. Thanks!

I can tell you I used to have HP 2700t, and the T400 build quality is MUCH better. Basically, given that they are basically the same price for the same features, I see no reason to buy and HP.

Toshiba drives are crap. I would never touch them. T400 ships with Hitachi, but I just replace them with WD Scorpios, which are great.

I'm not sure of the memory brand, but it's fine and I just went with the straight 4GB they provide (no big cost savings); I did get the cheapest hard drive, as there was cost and performance benefit to get them online and install afterwards.

Lenovo uses parts from a variety of manufacturers, so you won't know for sure what parts they used to build your machine until after it has been built and you do a parts look up. They can just tell you general stuff like DDR3 memory and harddrive spins at 5400rpms. You cannot expect that kind of control in laptop parts unless you build it yourself or replace the parts with your choices. You can expect this ofcourse if you build a desktop yourself...

just get the cheapest parts and upgrade yourself. even the 2x2GB DDR3 SODIMMs can be purchased for cheaper then Lenovo's upgrade (for a while it was better to let Lenovo upgrade the RAM).

What model was it? I generally used the 7kxxx series (7k100, 7k200, 7k320), as they have had the best specs for laptop drives (tho' word on the 7k320 seems unsure at the moment).
