I did a clean install, following the thread on this board, on my T400 with XP. I have, several times, had XP hang during startup at the screen with the scrolling blue bar. Then had to force power off the machine and startup again.

Then got the start normally or last known good startup option and used the start normally option and it started up fine.

Is there a tool offered by IBM to do a complete reformat of the HD. I would like to try that and then do another clean install and see if that works.

There should be a complete boot on the system disk. The FORMAT should work fine for you.

DBAN is Linux based, but works quite well.

You can format the HDD using the windows XP setup CD you have for installing the OS. I did that this way and had no problems when installing XP as well as using it afterwards. I have used XP for over a month so far and everything's been ok.

What program can I use to write zeros to the drive is probably the better question. Does ibm not have a program for this?
