I put together a little spread sheet of all these laptops (configured how I would get them) and I thought others might be interested in the spread sheet.
Note, I used the educational discount (~5%) for the Lenovo's.

It would be better if you used consistent configurations for comparable models, then the prices would make more sense. What is the purpose of the way it is if there is no consistency?

Sweet table. Already ordered a T400 but this confirms that that was the right choice. Very cool.
P.S. M440 is a 15.4" screen isn't it? -
-
Confirms my choice of the T400
-
Im surprised the E4600 doesn't use DDR3 ram but the 13.1" inch verison coming out in a little bit does use DDR3 ram
-
Me, too for the T400, unless Kevin's upcoming review shows some big negatives. Just can't beat the price especially with CPP.
-
The E6400 / E6500 has an advantage (in my opinion) with the backlit keyboard, faster processor, and CAD oriented GPU. However, it is at an disadvantage in size, memory (DDR2), and price.
-
If the E series had switchable graphics, I would probably buy it. Battery life is my primary concern though.
-
140MHz won't make that much difference in my opinion...still you were right that they got the faster processor...I would not prefer the CAD oriented GPU although business users will...and I have got Thinklight when working in the dark...I dun feel the specs of E6400/E6500 justifies the high price...maybe you do.
-
Why does everyone think that the E6400 is so much more? The model in that chart isn't comparable to the T400 in the chart- processor, hard drive and Lojack account for the difference. I've been able to configure similar models with the Dell being cheaper by about $50.
Can't wait for reviews of both. -
I am also deciding between the Latitude and the ThinkPad. Build quality is very important to me because I need something that feels solid. Anyway...
E6400 has DisplayPort, which is a considerable advantage. With only 1440x900 I definitely want to occasionally hook up an external monitor. VGA is just ridiculous. Who uses analog screens nowadays?
I don't know why M2400 is much cheaper then E6400 on Dell's site (with 4GB RAM, T9600, and 3YR on-site support). I much rather have integrated graphics to save on the battery. -
Here is another little comparison I did of the T400 versus the M2400 versus the E6400. Everything is so close!
-
E6400 CPU is different on two, with P8600/8400 the cost of 6400 will come down by 130$.
Even i am confused,W500 or M4400 or E6500.Totally stuck!
No idea which should i opt! -
-
T400 all the wayyyy!...(minus graphics)
-
T400 would be perfect...but lacks a DVI/HDMI or DisplayPort...therfore not an option to me. The M2400 seems to be the way to...or the T500 but it is impossible to get with LED here in Europe

Hi you guys. Recently I've been planning to buy a new laptop. After a lot of search I've narrowed my choice to E6400, E6500, T400 and T500. I am a pharmacist and beside reading articles and ebooks indoor and outdoor which is very important to me so it has to have a nice and bright LCD (My current laptop is HP NX8220 with a horrible LCD which irritates my eyes), I want to use this machine to run and develope pharmaceutical programs (such as artificial neural networks, molecular modeling, etc), regular web surfing, editing digital pictures with photoshop and using MS Office. Money is no object. Which one do you suggest? Please will you post your pros and cons?
-
you need to narrow your options. there is too big of a range between laptops in that chart.
laptops range $600 in price, different amounts of ram, Optical HDD/SSD, diff battery sizes, screen from 13.3-15.4.
decide on what size laptop u want first -
-
-
what do you mean by op?
-
Lol, I wish M4400 have LED WUXGA... hmmm -
Original Post? -
Yes. I am.
-
this is fun...
actually, he means the one who started the thread. -
I'm leaning toward E6500 since it has a WXGA+ LED LCD. Although I've heard about X200 tablet PC but I'm not definitely sure if it could cover all my needs. Specially the size of text in it.

For the money, the T400 is the best price performance in a 14" screen. (which seems pretty big with WXGA+).
And it is dirt cheap for a high quality laptop.
I'm good with it until quad-cores come out. -
Too bad the T400 GPU isn't all that. If only the M4400 was cheaper, better GPU, quad core processor, LED screen... except no switchable gaphics
T400 vs T500 vs W500 vs M2400 vs M4400 vs E6400 vs E6500
