I am looking to get the t400 but wanted to get some opinions on the blu-ray drive that is offered with the unit. Has anyone purchased with this option? Is the t400 bay different then t61p or is this the new panasonic slim drive. Anyone have some specs on this drive?

    Thanks for your thoughts.

    Jim

    Hey,

I doubt anyone on the forum got the blu-ray option. I've been reading alot of the thinkpad forums shipping thread and no one has gotten it. I think it's because its a 600$ upgrade? Most people can't afford that!

I think it's a new Panasonic drive. I doubt there's much information or user reports on it. I think there was a post on engadget about it a while back. It's probably a 2x burner which means about 45 minutes for a full single layer disc burn. If you want to watch Blu-Rays and can afford it I see nothing to keep you from getting it. Blu-Rays definitely look better than DVD though a lot will depend on the transfer. Using it for backups since it holds much more data than a DVD is another option though an external drive is probably more cost effective. Blu-ray discs are like $10 a pop

I wish they offered a BD-ROM drive at a more wallet friendly price. I might be interested in one of those. When they were offering the Blu-Ray drive for $100 upgrade on the R61 it was almost cheaper to buy the notebook, harvest the drive and sell it than buy it directy.
