I suspect it's my 5100 built-in card causing the fluctuating speeds, because I'm practically line of sight and there are no other competing networks.
How do I disable the on-board 5100 and install another N-wifi card? Do I get pcmcia? What other cards are best?
Please help!!

there are no better internal wifi cards for laptops than the Intel one, in terms of data throughput, stability, reliability.
If you have the smart card reader or the multi card reader, then you have one expresscard reader. If you don't have these card readers, then you have one expresscard reader and one pcmcia card reader.
What settings are you using for your wireless card? also is there other people in your neighborhood that uses wireless network? also what frequency are you using for your N protocol? 5.2 ghz or 2.4 ghz? -
I'm using 2.4, I think. It's the Intel 5100.

I have both x200 with 5100 and dir-655, no issues noticed so far.
How do you test your speed? I may try the same thing and see how it goes. -
My T400, T500, and X200 all have the Intel 5100 card and I have that same model router(I guess both of those are pretty popular, haha) and I definitely get varying connection speeds. They vary between 65Mbps to 130Mbps. I'm unsure why, however. Since I'm not doing file transfers between these systems using my wireless, it's more than adequate for my Internet use.
I do have problems with my X200 connecting to a neighbor's unsecured wireless network, though. Apparently it shares the same settings with a friend's home network I used in the past. Some sort of conflict with Access Connections and the Win7 wireless service... if I can only disable Win7's wireless settings, grr. -
Try using the 5.2 ghz frequency, the unstability maybe caused by too many people using this frequency.
