Hello my T400 pals,
I want to make sure my T400 is not an outlier.
If I remember it correctly, the laptop used to stay cool even under load. Now, the air vented from the notebook seems a tad too hot.
I had the same issue with my previous T61 with T7500( 65nm, 4MBL2, which is really hot). The CPU temperature used to climb as high as 97c and the pig would eventually start to throttle. It turns out that the thermal interface between the CPU and the cooler has deteriorated with time. I bought and applied the Arctic Silver and it helped big time.
So, I did the same with my T400 - changed the thermal interface to AS. But, now I need to see comparison. The temperature climbs to 88c with OCCT.
Of course it depends on the environment temperature. I feel more comfy in a heated room. My cpu must hate me for this.
Can anybody post their T400's temperature readings under load 15/30/60 mins with OCCT
Thanks!

Checkout the Undervolting Guide. Undervolting, if done correctly, will reduce your load temps by quite a bit.

Andy, I understand your suggestion, but don't fancy an idea of running another utility which barely runs under x64 flavor of vista and on top of that I am running gentoo. So, I really need a benchmark.
Thanks for suggestion, appreciate it. -
Oh, I think thats Linux. (maybe
)
RMClock runs fine in .Vista 64 (I run it), and there is one more - CrystalCPUID, which natively supports x64, and is very effective in undervolting, but there is no guide for it. Reducing the voltage won't affect performance, but will reduce the power consumption (P=VI), and therefore will reduce load temps more effectively than idle temps, plus better battery life. -
Andy, thanks for reminding the fact that reducing the current will lead to less heat dissipation by the electric circuit. You must know sth about thermodynamics.
Let me put it this way,
I am not trying to experiment superconductivity tests on my T400.
It just happens so that every thinkpad is sold with ms os preinstalled, so majority who got their t400 could easily run above mentioned application for 15 mins and sooth the guy who went to bed compiling kde and his laptop shutdown because the quilt created obstruction to the vent and "the pig" decided to protect itself by shutting down.

I ran ORTHOS.exe (a dual-core stress prime program) and my year old T61 went up to 98 C with the Max. Perf. power management profile. Playing a 3D game takes the CPU temp to 80 C. Perhaps there is a TIM problem.
I will check my T400 to see how hot it gets with ORTHOS.
