I'm assuming I just leave it in there?

Yep, it's a placeholder for the SIM card, which would be necessary if you use WWAN. IF you're not using it, leave it in. It doesn't do any harm, and could even help a bit by keeping dust out.

    Ok, thanks guys.

Also, on a slightly different tangent, how does the charging indicator light work? I plugged it in, the a/c led lights up, then the battery indicator next to it lights up. Both are green, but the battery light flashes intermittently. How do I know when its fully charged?

Between the hard drive activity indicator and the sleep indicator (moon), there are three lights, from left to right:
Powered On Indicator - lit when laptop is on
Battery Indicator - solid green when battery is plugged in and not charging, intermittently flashing green when battery is charging, solid orange when battery is low (<25%), intermittently flashing orange when charging but still at low charge.
AC Indicator - lit when laptop is plugged in

Do you know if it goes green at 50%+ or something higher?

I think it may have to do with the charging? I think it stays green once fully charged. Its yellow i its low. Speaking from experience with older thinkpad models.

No, it stays solid green when it is done charging - that is not necessarily 100%, as you can specify battery charge thresholds. For me, this is set at 95%.

The light changes from orange to green at 25% charge.

Love the info, much appreciated. The documentation that came with the unit is hilariously anemic (this is my first experience with Lenovo/IBM).

Did you get the WWAN option when you configured your T400?

Go into device manager. Yous should see an Ericsson F3507g WWAN adapter listed if you have the WWAN modem (picture below).

Even if you have the modem, you will still need to have an ACTIVATED SIM card. This is usually a WWAN plan from AT&T ($60/month), but it can work with a SIM pulled from a GSM smart phone as well (but this may be against your TOS, so you should check).

Well, you read the 1200-page books that come with the most simplistic electronics?

    I don't.

I only read the safety instructions sheet in my own language to laugh about the poor translation :p

If you don't have that part listed in device manager, and you want WWAN, you can purchase a f3507g modem aftermarket. It installs in the open mini-PCIe slot underneath the motherboard. Your ThinkPad is most likely of the default style and is "WWAN upgradeable". This means you have the WWAN antennas, but not the WWAN modem.

Alternatively, you could use a USB or ExpressCard based modem from a WWAN provider (however, this is less convenient than an internal option).
