so what does the x301 still have over the t400s? seems like the latter's got everything the x301 has and more?

T400s probably looks more modern to the average Joe...hence higher resale value?

Some prefer a bigger screen too..

hmm i just checked the specs. that's 0.1" thicker and 8oz heaver (comparing the same 6cell battery used). in fact, since u're looking at the 6cell battery, the x301 has a more girth in the battery section.

that seems negligible given the much stronger processor on the t400s..especially with the wider screen, battery life, and almost 2/3 the price..

feeling a little grumpy about my x301 ;p

Remember how old the x301 is now...
    It is regularly discounted.

    that's very true.

quick question: i notice on the review site (and on the lenovo driver page) that only verizon and at&t are available. does this mean i can't use the wan port with any other 3g provider even if i sign up with them?

The X301 is made for portability and battery life. I think nearly every configuration of it I've looked at had it equipped with a SSD. If you're comparing the two on the basis of price I'd factor that into the equation. I actually looked at the X301 extensively before I settled on the X200T.

    ETA:

If you get the ericsson 3G card unlocked you can use it with any GSM provider. The Gobi card is locked to Verizon. With HP you can choose your CDMA carrier

The T400s lack of higher capacity batteries really hurts as it can't get as much battery life as the X301 (or even against the T400).

so the wwan on the x301 depends on the card that I put in? sorry if my knowledge on wwan 3g cards is poor.. up till now i've been using a 3g usb dongle. also, does anyone know where the wwan slot is on the x301?

the t400s runs exclusively on 1.8" ssd drives as well, and i believe it is being marketed for its portability as well.

apparently lenovo will be allowing users to replace the dvd drives with a 3cell battery just like the x301.. so i figure both wil be pretty equal on the battery front.

    Underneath the ThinkVantage/power button.

The X301 has a ULV CPU, so I don't know how much, if any, this factors into the overall battery life (TDP of 25W vs 10W, so the X301 should theoretically have better battery life). Thing is, those of us who have gotten the X301 probably got it over a year ago, when there is much less choice in terms of ultraportable notebooks in this class. The T400s will probably cannibalise sales of the X301 right now.

You only have to remove the keyboard to install it.

I should have been more clear, The Gobi card has both GSM and CDMA chipsets in it. It's designed to be of use anywhere in the world. I know that several manufacturers use it as just that. For companies like the late OQO it was a matter of ordering the card and then it was up to you to call your carrier to transfer or set up service. Lenovo uses this card but keeps it locked to verizon. You either have to have a Verizon acct in good standing for 60 days or buy an unlock code to get the GSM side of the card unlocked. Dell, motion computing, and HP leave it unlocked. I have an unlimited data plan carried over from when Alltel merged with Verizon so I got the Gobi card. Odds are though that unless you plan to subscribe to Verizon, the Ericsson might be better. I think that Verizon has a more reliable network.

er...no....x301 has a ulv cpu which uses less power than an sp. x301 and t400s both maxes out at 9 cell i believe, 6 cell in the bottom, 3 cell in the ultrabay.

I've only seen an option for a 6 cell w/ the T400s, though the 3 cell is also compatible with it, there is a slight bulge due to its design for the T400. The 9 cell is only for the T400.

    er...no

the 6cell for t400s is not the 6cell for t400...the battery on the t400 is at the back. the battery on the t400s is under the palmrest. thers's no bulge at all on the t400s.

also, the 3cell that is compatible with the t400s is the ultrabay battery. the x30_'s 3cell is, like its 6cell, under the palmrest, BUT different to the one on the t400s

in short, none of the batteries that are used on hte x30_ can be used on the t400s

I never stated that the 6 cell for the T400 and the T400s were the same, they are very different. None of the batteries are interchangeable except the Ultrabay battery. The bulge I was referring to was in the Ultrabay battery which NBR users have noted and have taken photos of. Again, from my original and previous posts, there is no 9 cell battery for the T400s, only for the T400, which is one of the complaints about the T400s. You can't just add cells up, you need to look at the capacity to add them up. The T400 can far exceed either the X301 and the T400s.
