I've got a T41 that started showing verticle lines on the lcd yesterday morning. Restarting would cure the problem. Over the day it got gradually worse, now all I get is a black screen. I hooked up and external monitor, and got the same black screen. Is it toast?? It acts like it wants to boot up, power light is steady green.

Does your Thinkpad have ATi or Intel graphics? If ATi you may have encountered the loose GPU fault that is somewhat common in that generation of Thinkpads. As far a I know, the only way to fix it is to get a replacement motherboard. If you feel like you want to do that, I would scower Ebay for a replacement and maybe one with intel graphics to have a reliable machine for the future.

It has Intel graphics, according to the sticker. Does that make a difference?
Thanks! -
It might, but since you've got the Intel card, we can rule out the GPU Flex issue so common to the T4x units. Does it work with an external screen?
-
Nope, same black screen

Then I would say it's most likely the board. Might want to post over on ThinkPads.com in the Marketplace forum to see if anyone has anything you can use. Ebay as noted is another option.

i have never heard that the T41 laptop have an Intel GPU before.
I thought only the T41 either have the 7500 or 9000 ATI radeon. The first Intel GPU appeared in the T43 and R51 if i remember correctly.
