Hello, yesterday I got my new t410 and i notice the fan noise is high and also see others have had similar problems and have used tpfancontrol to help.
I did try this and it reduced the fan speed....but i prefer to not use this

BUT..its a little disappointing since its brand new...I am going to try and return this unit and get a refund or replacement.

are all t410's noisy or did i just get a lemon?

if i send it to depot - would they do anything?

also I didnt get any media (dvds) with it...is that normal? thanks

I saw this thread earlier but didn't get a chance to reply. Sorry for the late reply.
What do you mean by fan noise exactly? Does it just sound like the fan is on high? If so, you might try playing with Power Manager and adjusting the settings. Try a low power profile, like maximize battery life. Also I'd try setting System Cooling Policy to "passive", and Optimize Fan Control to "reduce noise dynamically". That might help.
To answer your last question, they don't come with recovery dvds, you have to burn your own. Take a look in the control panel, under Rescue and Recovery.
    Hope that helps. :)

I have found that heat (and fan noise) decreases after a day or so after initial use - both with Windows and Linux. At least you should wait a couple of days, I think. It is hard to tell if your "noise" is the same as others, other than being there. And of course an SSD instead of a HDD will reduce temperatures and fan usage. And you could run a CD-based linux OS to compare fan usage - worth a shot.

Odd. Mine has always been around the same loudness.

The T410 is certainly the loudest Thinkpad I have owned, but I have got used to the sound... it is never silent, and generally sounds the same to me. Previous laptops varied the fan more whereas the T410 is generally on all the time. It will ramp up a couple of notches if really stressed.

Fortunately it sounds like fast moving air rather than a fan motor whine itself, so I don't find it that annoying.

I doubt you have a lemon, but simply the same as all of us... you'll probably be charged a 15% restocking fee if you return it as it is working as designed - providing good cooling.

If it sounds like something other than just air moving fast, I would look into it more though.

The T410 is undoubtedly louder than the T400 - it has a smaller-diameter fan, if I remember correctly. Getting rid of some background processes (such as some useless ThinkVantage stuff) will help your computer run cooler, though, since the CPU will get more time to sit at the lowest power state.

Yes, you have to burn recovery disks yourself - double click on the Lenovo partition on the My Computer screen and it'll launch a prompt that will guide you through the process. You will need 1 CD and 2 DVDs for the set.
