    Hey everyone,

Was going to post this in the general 'what laptop should I buy' forum, but thought it'd make more sense to throw it in here since I'm already settled on a Thinkpad. I just don't know which one.

So I'm currently in first year Industrial Design at Carleton University. I'm surviving on an X41, but will definitely need a more powerful laptop for next year, when we start getting into 3D modelling with programs like Solidworks, and rendering software like Hypershot. But at the same time I want something that I can take around from class to class, for more casual stuff like taking notes, surfing the web, etc. So that's what I need - now I'm just debating which Thinkpad to go for.

The T410 is probably the ideal size laptop I want. The better battery life and portability are definitely a plus. I'm just concerned that it'll have enough power to get me through some of the 3D modelling I'll have to do. It won't be anything too complex and hardcore, but I want to be assured it'll hold its own. I understand the graphics card is 256mb and is a CAD-oriented Quadro. Would that be sufficient?

On the other hand, I know the W510's a beast that'll blow through anything I'll need it to, and the high-res screen is a big plus. What I'm worried about, is that the W510'll be just a bit heavier and bulkier to lug around as well as the big 135W adapter - plus the battery life probably won't be very long. It's just tough to make a decision like this without having these machines physically in your hands. Is the size difference between the W510/T410 pretty significant?

So that's the decision I've got to make. I'd love to hear some of your opinions for those of you who've had experiences with the machines, and what you might reccomend.

    Thanks a ton in advance.

Also, how's the WXGA+ screen on the T410? I've also got some graphic design work I'll have to do. Have there been any major complaints?

And I noticed that the discrete T410 has a 9-cell battery while the integrated ones have 6-cells. Is it possible to order the discrete T410 with a 6-cell, or buy it afterwards? I'd be willing to sacrifice some battery life for a battery that doesn't protrude out.

as a graphic and industrial designer myself, i'd vote for the W510.   not only will you be able to configure it with a better GPU but you'll probably appreciate having FHD (1920x1080) resolution for pallets and windows.

it may be more expensive but it would last a lot longer.   i fear you'll outgrow a T410 rather quickly.

I own a W510 and it's a great machine. It's not super portable and the 135W adapter is huge. On the plus size, lugging it around at university will build muscle and help you burn calories. :D

I think you need to weigh your options carefully. The W510 is going to last longer but it's not going to be a great option if you need to run off the battery for long periods of time.

    Thanks for the replies.

So I'm hearing the W510 is the way to go, and that's sort of what I was leaning toward. But I'd love to still make the W510 as portable as possible.

Which other model batteries will work with it? I believe I've heard the T510 batteries can, but how about older generations (W500, T500)? I'm wondering since the only option on the website is still just the 9-cell, and I'd be willing to give up some battery life for a bit more portability (and aesthetics) in a 6-cell.

Actually, is it possible to call Lenovo and ask to include a 6-cell from a T510 instead of having the 9?

    Thanks again for the advice.
