    Hi Guys,

long time reader -first time poster

I recently purchased a T410 with 4 gigs of ram..

With the default windows 7 64 bit install in the system properties it says

    Installed memory(RAM): 4.00 GB (3.86 GB usable)

Is everyone else getting the same thing? is it possible to 'free' those extra 140 or so mbs?

I am using a the discrete nvidia graphics card so it wouldn't be the graphics card reserving ram...

I have an x61 with 4 gig of ram with same os that does not have this problem.

    Anyone with any ideas?

Anything that needs address space has ram reserved. OS, hardware devices. That includes the gfx card. Data needs to go through the main ram on it's way to the gfx card and vice versa.

    i dont fully understand..

If i have a discrete graphics card with its own ram it doesnt need to use system ram

If you are saying that it needs to use address space in to access its own ram it would makes sense that it has to reserver the system ram if it was a 32bit operating system

Since i am using a 64 bit os it can use address space outside the 4 gig system ram anyway?

I was jsut wondering if this is specific to the t410 because as I mentioned
I do not have this problem with 4 gig ram on my X61

A dedicated graphics card may still take system memory for it's own use to supplement it's dedicated memory.

64 or 32 it doesn't matter. Main system ram still needs to be held in reserve for things like the kernel, gfx card and any other devices that need it. You cannot store information in theoretical address space.

I know it's not a T410, but my T510 with integrated graphics and Win 7 Pro 64 shows 8 GB total, 7.80 GB useable.
