I'm looking for a new Thinkpad and I'm debating between the T410 and T410s - is one noisier than the other? Ive been very annoyed with loud fans in the past - so I'd like to make a purchase that is as quiet as possible.

I've narrowed it down between the T410 and T410s, but if anyone knows of one even quieter (Thinkpad edge?), I'd be open to suggestions..

I have heard anecdotally that the new refreshes with Core i chips are a bit louder (or at least the fan runs more often) compared to the last gen. I wouldn't know between the t410 vs t410s though.

I had limited time with a T410s the other day, and from what I could tell, it was dead silent when used casually. Not sure about load though.

Same cpus in a slimmer case... don't see any reason why it would be more quiet.

T410 with i5-520m and integrated graphics should be quieter than T410s, but T410 with i7 and nvidia graphics will certainly need more cooling.

So the OP should be more precise in his questions...

Thanks for the feedback. Perhaps what I've heard about the T410 being noisy with the fan running constantly is over stated.

The fan in my T410 sounds nosier than my previous Thinkpads.

    I have i7 620m/integrated.

When I read the temperatures, it appears to keep the system around 35-40C except when really pushed. If I benchmark the processor the fan does pick up speed and then keeps things around 70C, so it's not like it's running at max speed all the time - it just sounds louder as if running faster at lower temperatures.

I read that it has a different blade design and which also makes a more noticeable noise.

It's not loud loud, but is noticeable in a normal room. And as it is a consistent white-noise type of sound it is not massively distracting... but far from silent as it never stops.
