My computer has suddenly hibernated itself when I am using it on battery. When turning it back on, Windows said that it hibernated due to the battery reaching critical levels. However, when I turn it on, the battery has 40% plus battery capacity left. Has anyone else had this problem? Is it a bad battery? I has happened about 3 times already.

I have a similar problem with my T500 although not to the same degree, the batter guage appears to be off in my own one by 10% so when it was at 15% it suddenly went into hibernation, difference was when I started it back up it said 5% so maybe a different problem.

I am currently doing a battery guage reset to see if that corrects it.

It could be a bad battery, however what is the condition reported in the power manager?

what is the value of actual and design charge capacity on your battery (check under Thinkvantage Power Manager's battery section in advanced mode).

Also, did you update the battery firmware?

    Power Manager 3.30
    Did not update battery firmware.
    Remaining Capacity 52.33 Wh
    Full charge Capacity 56.20 Wh
    Cycle Count: 20
    FRU part number: 42T4791
    Sanyo
    Manufacture Date: 2010-06-07
    Design Capacity 56.16 Wh

Would updating the battery firmware fix this problem?

Doesn't hurt to try, but I think that firmware update only updates the older batteries. Like it only updated my auxiliary 6-cell battery that I believe came from an SL410 in August 2009. I own a T410 with a 9-cell that I bought with the laptop, and a 9-cell seconary. It didn't update either of those as it said it didn't apply.

Otherwise, I'd try doing a recalibrate in Power Manager.

Also, you sure your laptop isn't set to hibernate in the power savings settings at some silly high percentage? ;)

Well your full charge capacity is higher than the design capacity which is a bit odd know?

I reset the battery guage and have found that my new capacity is 80Wh instead of 84 which is the design. I am pretty sure that is caused by when it was drained completely as I hibernated it but had that vista issue where it doesn't shut down properly due to the LAN I believe.

Have you let your battery drain completely before now?

Sorry, the full charge capacity is 56.10 Wh. Just had a typo.

I did not try updating the battery firmware because it is not part of the affect list.
Maybe I'll call Lenovo and see if a replacement battery helps.
Any recommendation on the brand? Sanyo, Panasonic, Sony, LG?

The firmware applied to my 9-cell LG battery in my T410. Guess it depends on the mfr.

I haven't experienced anything like this though. Sounds like a dud battery to me, but what's the harm in trying the firmware update?
