Dear all,
mine is 2518-GNA with Intel Corei5-430M. I just have a weird long windows shutdown problem. It started when i upgraded my memory to PC13333. Later it creates random blue screen. I decided to go back to PC8500 and everything seems fine.
I am not sure since exactly when, but now my system took a long time to shutdown. It seems that the windows and all the green indicators have been turned-off, but i still can hear the fan still running. I have to wait about 1-2 minutes until the fan is off eventually (and green fingerprint-LED indicator is on). Or, i have to disconnect the battery to completely turn-off the system. This is really annoying since i have to shut my system several times a day. Previously, the system shut down almost instantly after windows shuts.
My thought there should be something wrong with my windows. But later i found out, after i change the setting in BIOS "uploaded the default setting" (F9) and then "save settings and restart" (F10), the BIOS it self still take the same time to restart! The BIOS setting must have changed somewhat.
I want to reflashed (current version is 1.35) but the windows utility (and bootable BIOS disc) always prevent me to flash with the reason that i already have the most recent version.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks
Andrew

For your RAMs have you performed a Memory Test on the RAM modules to make sure it's running 100%? Try Memtest to make sure it's not faulty.
As for the BIOS you can theoretically downgrade to the previous version and then upgrade to the current one again though personally I don't think this should be the main cause for your shutdown problems. Maybe try a disk check to make sure nothing is corrupted on the drive and let Windows fix errors if it finds any. -
Thank you for your reply.
Where can i get old BIOS for T410i? Mine is 1.35. -
This is the link for BIOS version 1.34 via the Lenovo website. Though if you prefer the CD-ROM option use this - Bootable CD ROM version.
-
Thank you for the link.
I already use memtest and have repeated the test for three times, no error found on both of the memory. I also have reflashed BIOS to 1.34 and reflashed again to 1.35. So far nothing is changed.
I just remember that few days ago, i was in a hurry and close my laptop (directly go in to standby mode) and go in a rush to switch office. And i found that after i arrived, the laptop is pretty hot (it was a hot day anyway) but still in the sleep mode. Maybe this overheating caused the problem? -
Try to update the driver's from Lenovo and don't use Window Update to update your drivers. I had a WiFi adapter for my desktop that has this problem every time I update the driver from Window Update server.
-
Thank you for your reply. I always firing SysUpdate 4.0 first, then i use Windows Update, specially for Service Pack 1.
Which update i need to get rid off?
I am almost sure this is a BIOS issue, since every time i change and save setting in BIOS, it takes a considerable amount of time to restart. -
Not sure if you have the same problem like me, but I would not update driver from Window Update. Try running SysUpdate to check if there is a Lenovo specific driver to download.
-
I have installed both from windows update and sys update.
Some additional of my problem : The computer shuts down (LED and power button is off) but i definitely still can hear the fan is running. The only way to complete the shutdown process is to remove the battery.
Once i forget to remove the battery, the laptop become extremely hot in its bag. So hot i almost cannot touch the metal hinges. And the fan is still running.
Any help please? -
Dear all,
by trial and error, i found solution to the problem. It appears that some BIOS settings have screwed-up regardless if i am resetting to the default using F9/F10 command in BIOS.
What i do is :
a. unplug the BIOS backup battery
b. do the POST to clear the BIOS memory
c. plugging the battery cable again
d. resetting the date and time
Voila!!! Everything back to normal. My data is still intact, no need to replace the HDD or reformat the drive. Just some BIOS corruption.
Phew! -
Congratulation, glad that it work out for you.
