would the i3 in the 'i' provide any significant battery life advantage as opposed to the i5?

no, it wouldn't, i3 is just a cheaper alternative of the i5.

With chips that have the same TDP, the Core i3 chips use a tiny fraction less power on idle and load than the Core i5 chips, but it's insignificant. The battery life will be the same.

When the i5 system uses turbo boost the power consumption also peak up with it. So the battery life of i3 will be similar to the battery power if i5 with turbo boost turn off.
