I just got a week old T410s from a fellow NBR member and am quite pleased with it. I am thinking of upgrading from the stock 1.8" 250GB HDD to an SSD. What would be my options besides the Intel X18-M series? I'm trying to do my homework before pulling the trigger on a X18 160GB (hopefully G2)
ebay also has a bunch of ultra bay HDD adapters for cheap. Does any one have any experience with those and can any one comment on the performance / reliability of a second HDD in the ultra bay. Is it hot swappable & has any one ever had any problems with it. I'm planning on putting a 2.5" 500GB 7200 RPM in the ultra bay if / when i get an SSD
    Thanks!

I have the 80gb X18-M with a 2nd hdd in the ultrabay using the "ebay" adapter. Works great. Haven't tried to hot-swap, my ultrabay dvd drive is basically unused and the ultrabay battery is for travelling...

80gb ssd + 500gb hdd is plenty of space.

x-18M would be my recommendation, although I'd opt for 80GB (much cheaper and should still be plenty of space, especially with a second HDD).

There was a thread about the eBay Ultrabay adapters. Some people were complaining of potential data loss, but I'm not sure how widespread that is. Also, I would recommend a 5400rpm drive for the ultrabay unless you really need the extra performance (cheaper, quieter, uses less energy, etc.).

If it's anything like the ultrabay on my T60, you can hot swap.

Thanks guys, looks like the 80GB intel ssd would be the best bet with a 500gb in the ultrabay. If any of you have bought an HDD ultrbay from ebay recently that performs as expected, can you please share the link so i can buy from the same seller. Don't want to shell out extra money on the original Lenovo part if they both perform the same. Thanks!

The third party adapters can be a bit more flaky. Sometimes they work and other times not. If you need reliability then you're probably best off going with a genuine ThinkPad part.

I have a Corsair CMFSSD 256GBG2D 256 GB disk on my extreme at home. I'd recommend this disk.

This is a 2.5 inch drive that won't work with the T410s.

A professor in my department had money to burn so I got him the 256 GB SSD from Lenovo. It works well inside his new T410s and gives him the capacity he wants.

Wish my SSD would be covered by a grant as well ;)
By the way who makes the 1.8" 256GB SSD sold by Lenovo?

Could be either Samsung or Toshiba, Lenovo uses both and considers them interchangeable (despite different performance characteristics).

Yeah, he is pretty loaded. In fact, it is he who wanted the 256 GB SSD. His T410s came with the 128 GB SSD and he wanted more space. We put the 128 GB in his X300. The 64 GB SSD from his X300 might go in his T61. Oh and did I mention he just got a new Dell desktop too?
The one my professor got is this one that I recommended: http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/...-category-id=2478535BAB3C417CA9D77F5867D31462 IIRC it is a Toshiba drive.

given that he got you to get the ssd, i would imagine your Professor would be in Science, Business/Commerce, some Engineering field related.
