I just recently received a new system from Lenovo. I love my new ThinkPad very much, but I seem to have an issue every few days were the system locks up completely and I have to hold down the power button to shut it down.
The system log shows a Critical Event 41, Kernel-Power error.
I checked Microsoft Support's website and my problem fits their 3rd scenario. Which sums down to the possible issues of:
1) Over-clocking - Which I am not currently doing.
2) Faulty Memory- I installed new memory from G.Skill, but it passes all the memory tests in the Lenovo Toolbox.
3) Power Supply- N/A?
4) Overheating- The system seems to be fine.
Any ideas? This is driving me insane!![]()

Put the original memory in/remove the new memory and see if the problem goes away.
-
Yep, the error is just resulting from your hard shut down - to solve the lock-ups, you'll need to narrow it down to either software or hardware. If you just received the machine and haven't really done too much customization yet, I'd suggest just using your factory recovery disks and reformatting the system (or better yet, to do a clean install) and seeing if that resolves your problems. If they persist, then it may be time to give Lenovo Tech Support a call.

Okay I ran a two hour memory test lasting night using MemTest86+ and the memory is definitely in perfect condition.
I think this may be a driver problem crashing the system and I had wanted to see if any other owners were experiencing the same thing.
More Info:
I recently re-installed the Nvidia driver to see if that was the problem, but it did not work.
I think I recall always listening to music when it happens, so I am reinstaling the audio driver and I will see what happens with that. -
It may be driver, but I wouldn't write off the memory and still recommend my test.
I remember running memory tests in the past that passed and yet the RAM was still incompatible in some way. Strange I know! -
I'd definitely say it could be memory. My T410s came with 2GB and it runs just fine but i wanted more RAM so got a 2GB from Crucial.com and right away i'd notice errors in random applications, IE crashing, WMP crashing, Outlook crashing. So ok I figured maybe i'd format and even on a fresh install it would happen. I RMA'd the RAM with Crucial and got another and it's been just fine now. I did a 8hr MemTest86+ also and got no errors.
Other than RAM though i'd also suspect AHCI drivers? Did you get the latest ones from Intel?
I'd always do a fresh clean install with a Windows disc and see if problems still occur in my testing. -
I want to try and see if these driver updates fix anything because I really need the 8GB I have in my system and to try and test the system with 2GB for a week would be killer.
If the system crashes again I will try switching back to 2GB and testing.
Thanks guys. -
Right now I am currently testing the memory because reinstalling the audio and video drivers didn't work. (Although now the system just freezes up for a minute instead of crashing after installing the audio driver)
I am testing the original system memory right now.
PS- I noticed that in Lenovo System Updates there is an update listed for "Intel Audio", but when it downloads its actually for the turbo boost. No matter how many times I install this driver it still says for me to install the update... problem there maybe?
I'm just hoping there isn't an issue with the system board. I'd rather it be a software issue which I could fix my self or wait for an update.
EDIT: It seems this may be a model wide issue because this issue posted on the Lenovo forum is very similar. http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T410s-random-lockup-igxpdv32-DLL-STOP-0x000000EA-THREAD-STUCK-IN/m-p/373309/highlight/false#M38811 -
Your T410s is Intel GPU only?
-
I usually have dual monitors attached to my dock though so both GPUs are almost always in use. -
I have the Optimus model. I have a 27" and 24" Dell attached to my dock. The BIOS is set to discrete only so it's only using the NVIDIA gpu.
No issues here. -
I am having a problem were the video and mouse stutter randomly.
It seems to happen more often if I am playing a video game, listening to music, or watching videos online.
I have 8GB of RAM and have updated to the latest Audio and Video drivers. I also have the latest version of the BIOS.
Also despite the graph below which seems to stop recording when the error occurs it happens for about a continuous minute or so.
-
I have seen it on occasion with mine as well. I'm pretty sure Adobe Flash is doing it.
It doesn't last long, but I'm hoping the releases of FireFox 4 and IE 9 GPU support will make it disappear. -
During the above sample when this happened I was just gaming in Counter Strike Source, so flash was not running at the time.
I really don't want to restore my system to the factory image, but I'm at my last leg. -
Is your BIOS set to discrete only?
-
The BIOS is set to Optimus.
-
This seems to be a widespread issue with the Optimus technology. =/

It happens very infrequently on mine. I keep trying to spot a trend to understand what might be causing it.
-
It seems to happen most often during heavy multimedia usage.
I don't understand though why this apparently old and widespread issue hasn't been fixed yet. =/ -
I contacted IBM support today and spoke to one of their "higher level" technicians.
He wanted me to send the machine in and he said it would be back in under a week, but I need the machine and don't think I can do that.
I am certain the issue is a driver issue.
I wish more people with Optmius machines could comment on how their GPU is working for them.
Mods: Would you mind changing the main title of the thread to "CPU Spikes? Video and mouse Stutters on T410s". Thanks. I feel it is more descriptive and will get more people to look into the possibly common issue.
