It was probably in the DIY ViDock thread but I think you could have gotten a lower end card and still score that high since the PCIe 1x is the limiting factor.

It is truly a failing of the computer industry that there isn't a standardized external graphics card port. Maybe intel's lightpeak will do the job when it comes out.

It's a DIY ViDock implementation by wilse.

wilse had originally wanted to do a x2 implementation and lined up a HD5850 but decided combining 2xmPCIe slots to achieve it was not really practical.

Interest parties could do a US$250 setup to get only slightly lower performance than the HD5850 linked. Ie: PE4L + 1GB HD5770 + ATX psu, or PE4L + 1GB Gigabyte HD5750 + 12V/80W for a compact solution. Though the 2GB HD5850 card might have some performance benefits. We don't have benchmarks to indicate just how much.

Or if don't mind combining the two mPCIe slots, could do a x2 setup which will see very impressive performance. Add another US$62 to the cost for that.

HA! Have you seen the new XFX 5970 4GB that ships in a box shaped like a gun?
