Hi,
Lately I've noticed that occasionally that fan on my T410s will stop running, the fan vent area will become extremely hot, and the laptop will smell faintly of burning plastic (both plugged in and unplugged). I've also noticed that every time this happens, the battery icon on the outside of the laptop will remain lit even when unplugged. Upon restart, the computer displays a simple white-on-black "Fan Error" and shuts down. Another reboot will make the laptop act normally.
I've experimented with the conditions a little, and I'm fairly certain this mostly happens when I put the laptop to sleep plugged in, then wake it while unplugged.
I would greatly appreciate any information on a possible solution or additional tools I could use to further diagnose the problem.
Many thanks

Or it has a defect that could lead to a fire. Might want to have it repaired under warranty.

I would seriously consider calling Lenovo and getting this fixed under warranty if you still have some remaining. I think the battery icon should remain lit, however; at least it does on my T500 and X200 when working off of battery. Still, this points to a fan on the way out; if left unchecked the lack of cooling will very likely toast your T410s in pretty short order.
T410s instances where fan doesn't run, battery light stays on, overheats
