I like it how that the S will get switchable graphics (Another reason to get S whereas before, it only provided integrated graphics). As for the harddrives, could I go with the SSD option and then ask them to take out the optical drive and put a real 2.5 HDD?

I would like to have the Windows 7 and applications on the SSD and then just store all my files in the HDD. I rarely ever use an optical drive so if I do, I can just purchase an external one.

Just buy the HDD bay adapter yourself and plug in the HDD.

It will be a while until Lenovo moves this from the handful of IdeaPads to Thinkpads, but Lenovo is aiming to make things "better" than having seperate SSDs and hard discs. Probably a niche application yet I think its admirable to automate some of the guess work of managing hard drives.

as said you can get a Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter III 43N3412 for your T400s or T410s and install a platter hdd (9.5 mm in thickness) in them, rather than the optical drive that usually occupies them. In some instances, you can option the laptop with no optical drive, in which case it would save you some money for a part that you are not going to fully utilize.
