M 1.7Ghz, 2x512 ram, SXGA, 128mb FireGL, 60gb/7200k HD, 9 cell battery. Warranty expires soon, but I'd have a chance to extend it, though I probably will skip that, as I figure I can do most repairs myself - this is a backup laptop, so not worried about very fast repair turnarounds.

A guy on CL near me is asking $500. Hoping to get him down to $400. What's a fair price for this machine?

I would say that's a good deal. A quick sweep on eBay shows around ~$300-350 for the T41, so with the additional "p", then $400 seems very reasonable.

Thanks for the info. OK, sounds like I should stand firm on $400.

The price of used T4x series laptop prices are dropping like a rock. I would test the waters and offer less then $400. Check out the Thinkpad forum and you will see lower prices then this.
There was a T40 for $275 posted this weekend.....
