    hi guys

i got my ibm T41p (2373 GEH) with everything in late feb
i was using sony Z505 and R505 before this T41p, so partition
    is my favourite.

however after i got my T41p, after installating partition magic and did a
15/45GB partition, i realised it is not compatiable with ibm rapid restore.
so i either have to give up rapid restore or partition, and i gave up partition in the end.

i was told my ibm i could either format the computer, do a partition through dos or something, then after that, press the ACESS IBM, and it will do a hidden recovery image on the C: and D: will
remain as a normal NTFS data drive.

has anyone tried that before ?

coz with t41p, due to the fact that they need to keep it a slim and light weight, there is just the ultra slim bay, and there is no extra ultra bay 2000 as an additional drive

does anyone know how to make partition in dos ? it needs the start up disk right ? or anyone have any better suggestion/solution?

    thanx in advance

    Hi snoopy,
I'm having a hard time understandig exactly what you want to do. Explain to me again what it is you need to do.
If your trying to copy or backup the HPA "hidden protection area", then your best bet is to call IBM support and have them sned you the restore disks for your model, they are free if you ask within the 1st month after buying your notebook, after that they will charge you for them, It's not too mcuh and you will need them someday.
After you get the disks you can recreate the HPA. Read this thread, I posted a link to the instructions.

no, i got used to the sony laptop, where they do the partition for u already, eg u have a 40GB HD, they already partition it into C:20GB and D:20GB

so it is very convenient if something goes wrong in C;, u can just put the recovery cd and recover back to original factory default setting to C: and all the movies, mp3, word document, etc on D: are not affected at all

but partition magic is not compatiable with ibm rapid restore
and pc doctor, rapid restore image is tooo big and i cant be bother to use it, so i deleted and stopped using rapid restore now

is there any method where we can partition our ibm 55GB (coz 5GB is hidden partition) into two drives, say C:15 and D:40GB
and the hidden recovery image will still work ?

    Sure,
Just use partition magic 8 and split the 55GB partition into two or more partitions to your liking.
Remember you still need to backup your data another way as well because all those partitions are still on the same physical drive so that as soon as the hard drive crashes you will loose all the partitions.

i dont have mind having the hidden 5GB recovery image inside the ibm hard disk, as the 60GB HD from ibm is enough for me anyway

i just hope to have a compatable and safe method where i can do a partition

say if i give up on rapid restore, and i use partition magic 8 to make c:15Gb and D:40Gb, and say one day the C: has got serious problem and i need to do a recovery image, when i hit the Acess IBM button and make it back to factory setting, will the hidden reocvery image be recovered on C:? will it work ?

got an reply from ibm regarding partition, if doing a recovery from ACCESS IBM erase partition

The recovery program defaults to C, regardless of its partition size.

    Thank you for contacting IBM.

Check out the automated solutions now available from IBM for selected ThinkPad, ThinkCentre and NetVista systems.

    Hi snoopy,
The access IBM button will still work and when doing a system restore, I'm pretty sure it will only restore to the C: partition.
It is best to test this out before getting alot of dtat on D: partition just to be sure.

    good luck

    thx bootleg2go

so are u saying, now i can use partition magic 8 and make a partition, C will be for windows as usual, and D will just just NTFS for me to put word document or mp3

and if one day windows on C drive died, once boot up, i pressed "access ibm" and then click "restory to factory setting" and the recovery factory setting only default to see, like the ibm support says so ?

    heaheah
i got the most confirmed, definite answer after talking to ibm today

here's the solution if users wanna insist on partition

back up before u do anything as this method will erase everything first

ok, go to dos, FDISK and make a partition from there
C and D will be clean
then go to ACCESS IBM and do a restory to factory settings and you can choose the image on C:

then now C: will be imaged as the original setting and D as pure data

all ibm laptop hard disk has now got the hidden partition and this replaced the recovery cd

in order to do partition, using partition magic 8 doesnt work, it will, but if you need to do a "restorre to factory settings" it wouldnt, as told by ibm technical support staff today

so the safest way is :
    back up your data first
go to dos, do FDISK, create partition from there.
restart, press ACCESS IBM, and "restore to factory setting", you will now recovery the "factory setting" image to C: and D: will be left alone as pure data drives.

but FDISK is a complicated matter. http://www.newlogic.co.uk/kbase/fdisk/page2.htm
when we come to the 2nd screenshot, do we pick 1 ?
if follow step2, will that delete our hidden partition as well ?

if the hidden partition is deleted, that means we cant restore to factory setting ?

    thank you
