    Any thoughts as to whether I should go with a DVD-Recordable device or a CD-RW/DVD device?

    Are the speeds of the DVD-Recordable device when burning audio CDs higher than those of the CD-RW/DVD device?

    I am really confused here...thanks!

    Also: from the time I place my order with IBM, how long will it take them to ship the computer (not one of the buy now, ship same day deals)?

    I would just get the CD-RW/DVD as the DVDRs are way too expensive still for notebooks. I don't think their DVDR will burn an audio CD any faster than the CD-RW. For all the extra you would need to spend you could buy a USB DVDR that could be used externally for your notebook and desktop and have enough left over for a GB of RAM or an extra 60GB 7200rpm drive for your notebook.
    IBM usually ships within the time frame they specify, many times much sooner.

    I agree with bootleg2g0. Until the price of DVD-recordable comes down to CD-RW/DVD drive (as in the market for desktop optical drive), I would stay away from DVD-recordable. And if you want to backup the data, I would buy 2nd hdd adapter and notebook harddrive for the money of DVD-recordable.

    Can the DVD Recordable write CDs as fast as the CD-RW/DVD drive?

    Thanks in advance for your help!

    Contrary to my guess that the cd-writing speed is the same for multi-burner and cd-rw/dvd combo drive, there seems to be some differences in cd-writing speed. This is because there a few different models in cd-rw/dvd combo drives.

    Multi-burner;
    Maximum data transfer rates:
    Write speeds(4):
    CD-R media 16X Max 1.23 - 2.46 MB/Sec ZCLV
    CD-RW media 4X 0.61 MB/Sec CLV
    High-speed CD-RW media 8X 1.23 MB/Sec CLV
    DVD-R media 2X 2.77 MB/Sec CLV
    DVD-RW media 2X 2.77 MB/Sec CLV
    DVD-RAM media 2X Max 1.38 - 2.77 MB/Sec ZCLV

    one of cd-rw/dvd combo drives (48X/32X/48X/16X Max CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo Drive);
    CD-R media 48X Max 3.0 to 7.2 MB/s CAV
    CD-RW media:
    - Multi-speed 4X 0.6 MB/s CLV
    - High-speed 10X 1.5 MB/s CLV
    - Ultra-speed 24X Max 2.4 to 3.6 MB/s PCAV
    - Ultra-speed+ 32X Max 3.0 to 4.8 MB/s PCAV
