Today I bought a module of 1GB RAM (Corsair Value RAM) and tried to slot into the optional memory upgrade slot. My T42 failed to load after power on. I can't even go into BIOS. But it back to normal when I removed the new RAM and slot back the old 256MB RAM.Do anyone experienced the same problem after upgrading the RAM? Compability problem?

    Thanks

Make sure the memory is PC2700 and more importantly has a CAS latency of 2.5. Most cheap-er SO-DIMM's are CAS3 and you will not even be able to boot your PC with that. If you can return the memory please do so and ask the vendor for CAS2.5. The T42 uses the Intel 855 PM chipset and it MUST have CAS2.5 memory to work.

The complete majority of PC2700 on the market is CAS2.5. You have to look REALLY HARD to find something that is CAS2, and EVEN HARDER to find something that's CAS3. It's probably just an out-of-the-blue compatibility problem. Trial and error is all that can be done.

Yes and No! You will be surprised that many memory vendors manufacture CAS3 memory in PC2700. To eliminate or reduce the element of trial and error, do a search on the exact model of memory you are buying. If you are actually physically getting it from a store, test it on the spot - bring the laptop in. Which I did for a friend's Dell D505 by testing memory I was buying for him on my previous T42. Incidentally that happened to be Corsair VS512SDS333 - which is CAS2.5.
