I'm planning on replacing the original 40GB Fujitsu hard disk with 120GB Western Digital Scorpio. I've read that some Thinkpads accept only IBM certified hard disks. How about T42? Can I replace the hard disk with any 2.5" IDE disk?

What are "certified hard disks"? I would say that maybe IBM/Lenovo recommends that you use certain brands of trusted hard disks, but I doubt that they put a filter in ur computer that if it sees a "wrong" hard disk it will not be able to use it and just give u a blank screen.

I say contact lenovo about this if u really care, but overall you should be able to use any kind of hard drive u want (be it that its the right connection aka ide like u said)

I have no idea but according to this T43 doesn't accept all hard disks. But I'm not sure if that's true and does it affect T42 as well. That's why I asked.

By the way, will the Active Protection System work if I replace the hard disk?

It should do. It's software based, and sends a message to the HD to park the heads when it detects a fall.

It is not an issue on the T42.
