As near as I can tell, this needs DDR 333 (PC2700) RAM and it has 1 GB installed. I added 1GB DDR400 (PC3200) and power up, the screen remains blank and I get:

    beep
    beep beep beep
    beep beep beep
    ...

From ThinkWiki I find "Memory problem: bad DIMM or bad DIMM slot"

Do I need to match the speed of the additional RAM or should I be looking for something else?

At the moment I'm running Memtest86+ and it has already reported an error for the RAM we have been using for years now. :(

    thanks,
    hank

You probably have to match speeds. Laptops are more picky than desktops. If not then maybe you got a bad stick. Pull the new one out and see if it boots again.

Thanks for the tip. I just finished pulling the keyboard to give it a try and got the same results with the new (old) RAM by itself.

The "new" ram came out of another laptop that seems to be dieing. It is an Athlon (64bit) and has two sticks of this RAM. With both installed. Memtest86+ reports errors but with only one, none are found. It seems to have other problems too (trackpad is wonky.) so I thought I'd switch some RAM to another PC. So far that seems not to work. (Even with both sticks, the other system boots, but usually locks up within minutes.)

    thanks.
