I have a Lenovo T420 laptop with Intel integrated graphics and a Thinkpad Mini Dock Series 3. Currently, I am using 2 Dell P2210 monitors connected via DVI to the dock. This works great. I want to add a 3rd P2210 monitor. The laptop will be closed on the dock so I do not need the laptop display to be active. Is this possible? If so, do what is the proper configuration?

    Thanks!

    Get a USB video adapter.

Is that my only option? Will the laptop + dock not drive a 3rd monitor even if I used DisplayPort?

It can't, Intel HD3000 only supports two simultaneous displays.

Not with integrated graphics. NVIDIA Optimus - ThinkPad Multiple Monitor Configurations

There are DisplayPort splitters to multiple monitors, but they are more expensive than USB adapters and whether HD3000 will be able to drive 2x1920x1xxx monitors even with such splitter is questionable.

you can consider something like Displayport to Dual DVI splitter from Startech. It will treat your two LCD as one large LCD. The USB video adapter will cause slow down to your computer, and for video intensive stuffs, it will have an impact on the image quality. The displayport to dual dvi is directly driven by your Intel GPU, so there is less performance degradation.
