I'm seeing the T420i available for $799 and then the upgrade to the 1600 x 900 screen being +$50 before any coupons, right now you get 10% off using GOOGLESHOP (even if you don't use google checkout that works) so you can pretty much get a basic config with screen upgrade for $800, not bad. Prices are always higher to begin of course so once T410 inventory is reduced and Intel drops prices on its chips we'll see a price drop.

It appears that the T520 is considerable cheaper than a T420 with the same or similar specs.

They are available in base configurations.

There are no Quad Core I7s yet available, nor graphics choices, nor WWAN card upgrades yet.

Those will be posted on the 29th of March. Just tried to order a 2720QM T520 and couldn't. It went to the cart but noted that my configuration wasn't available so it defaulted to a 4239CTO. Chat confirmed the availability on the 29th of the other 3 juicy components.

By then the W520 should be up and that choice will remain T520 or W520.

So the t series is generally considered to be on par with the x series, right? I'm seeing the t420 with an i7, BT, 9-cell battery and upgraded wireless for less than $1,100 on the SPP with 10% coupon. I have 8GB of RAM waiting. Seems like a good deal to me. I was going to wait for the x220, but I already have the x120e and want a "bigger" laptop for the "family" machine. What's the battery life like?

Yeah I know tell me about it. Plus Dell includes a standard 3 year depot warranty with any mainstream E series notebook. I hope this might drive down the prices on the E6410 as I would like another one.

Looking at the configs on the T420, mSata options are not available yet. I am new to Lenovo (was using Asus), but want a T420 with an 80GB mSata, a 750GB hdd, and the optical drive.
    1) Should I have any issues buying a T420 today, and then buying the mSata myself to install?
    2) How easy are Lenovo laptops to pull apart (I have upgraded my wifi card on an Asus laptop, so I am reasonably comfortable enough pulling a laptop to pieces when no easy access panel is available)?
    3) Would the first batch have any bios issues with using mSata, or as this was listed as an option, should it be fine to install myself?

Well the T420 would weight a bit more, the t410s is a lighter version of the T410 ... if you are still trying to get a laptop that is somewhat light (which is something I always look for) you may want to wait a bit for the T420s to come out...

Are they going to be releasing these with the Quadro cards?
I am looking at the T420, but am debating between just having the HD 3000 graphics or getting one with the Quadro 4200m if it becomes available.

The only game I really play is League of Legends with a buddy, so I'm still debating if the Quadro would even be worth it, considering with HD graphics the battery life with a 9 cell would be insane.

    Edit:
Just configured this with my student discount and 10% off:

    Intel Core i5-2540M Processor (2.60GHz, 3MB L3, 1333MHz), Intel HD 3000 graphics
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64
    14.0 HD+ (1600 x 900) LED Backlit Display, Mobile Broadband Ready
    Intel HD Graphics 3000
    2 GB PC3-10600 DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz SODIMM Memory (1 DIMM)
    No Fingerprint Reader
250 GB Hard Disk Drive, 5400rpm
    DVD Recordable
    9 cell Li-Ion Battery
    No Bluetooth
    Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 (2x2 AGN)10
    4177: 1 Year Depot Warranty
    Total - $976.49 + tax

    How does that look?
I plan on using it for Photoshop CS5, Lightroom CS3, tons of MS Office for grad school, and the only game I play on the PC is League of Legends. I'm assuming this setup will be plenty.
I would upgrade the RAM with 4gb additional (6gb total) and a 640gb 7200rpm HD from Newegg, for a heck of a lot less than Lenovo's price.

    What about warranties with Lenovo?
I was considering getting the next day on site service with accidental damage for the laptop, is this necessary with a T-series?
I bought it for my XPS due to the nature of Dell's reputation, and unfortunately, it has been brought into use more than I care for.

Necessary? That depends on how necessary your laptop is in your life.

For me, my primary development machine absolutely has to be usable on a day-to-day basis -- so I either get onsite warranties or keep replacement parts/spare laptop(s) myself (I've done the former when using new laptops, going with the latter at the moment since I'm using a T60 for dev.)

If you can live without the laptop for a couple of days, I'd skip the onsite option and just stick with a depot warranty.

As far as reliability is concerned, I've had excellent luck with ThinkPads in the past, but (and this is important) since the T420 is a completely new model, it's impossible to say what issues may or may not affect it a few months/years from now.

My advice regarding warranties is this:

    1) If you're comfortable following instructions and can wield a screwdriver, skip the warranty altogether and just fix any faults yourself. Unlike most other manufacturers, Lenovo publishes complete, exceptionally-in-depth manuals with step-by-step instructions for replacing pretty much every single component of their ThinkPads. That, plus the free video tutorials (yes, they provide video tutorials) are enough to help anyone who's even reasonably careful and capable replace most any failed part. This is probably the cheapest option unless you anticipate numerous failed, expensive parts.

    2) If you use your machine for work, or if work is picking up the tab, get an on-site warranty. If your machine is otherwise critical, same.

    3) For everyone else, get the base warranty and purchase a third-party warranty from SquareTrade. It's cheaper, and they have a pretty solid guarantee backed (fixed in 5 days or a full refund) by a rather good reputation. You can also get accidental damage protection from them for an additional fee. Do a search for coupon codes too, as they *always* are running some form of promotion.

Seeing that the ThinkPad T520 has some options for the screen. I'm wondering if anyone has some insight to the 15.6" FHD ( 1900 x 1080) LED Backlit Anti-Glare Display that Lenovo is offering on this new Sandy Bridge ? Cannot find anything regarding this screen using a Google search.

    Thank you

Thanks for the correction from the spec sheet.

Wonder if its worth the extra cost for that resolution over the lower one ?

So many new decisions to make with the T420 / T420s / and X220 coming out as well and the only review thus far is the X220.

For the T510, I always recommend the FHD (1920x1080) panel: it is qualitatively better than the lower-resolution panel options, and the extra cost is justified. I do hope I will be able to say the same thing about the T520 when it arrives in various configurations.

Well I'm a grad student and need my computer constantly for homework and studying for exams we have every week. Even being without my computer for more than a day isn't acceptable, which is why I bought onsite next day warranty for my garbage XPS. Dell's idea of "next day" is this direct quote "the technician will be there within 2-3 business days". ?

I am comfortable with a screwdriver, built tons of desktops in the past and have upgraded a Macbook Pro and my XPS. Does Lenovo allow end users to do their own repairs?

If not then I'll spring for next day, the bonus being the Thinkpad Priority support, where I will never have to talk to an Indian ever again!

Haha, don't rub it in. This was Dell consumer on site, I've learned my lesson.

I'm heavily considering joining the dark side, I have my T420 configured, just hesitating putting in my CC info. Pretty sure I'm gonna buy it though. I had a T61 in undergrad (regret ever selling that thing) and my Dad has used a T60 his business gave him like 4 years ago, still going strong. His coworkers have the low end 14" Latitudes and are all jealous of his Thinkpad, which is pushing me even further to the darkside.

Got it for $1165 after tax, shipping, and an additional AC adapter for school so I can leave my other one tucked into my desk. Pretty excited for a reliable computer.

Does Lenovo typically build these things pretty fast? The sales rep said 8 days max, just curious if they're typically faster than that.

Edit: Just saw this when reading about the T420, "With its standard 9-cell battery, the ThinkPad T420 delivers up to 15 hours of battery life" Thats insane! I don't even need the spare AC adapter to carry around with me...

Ok, I've already decided that I want the T520 with the following:
    HD+ display
    9 cell battery
    500GB 7200 HDD
    Fingerprint reader
    Bluetooth
    Camera
    Win 7 Pro 64

I'm thinking about ordering one of the preconfigured models (424049U), which also adds the NVS 4200M. I know I'll have to wait a bit longer than ordering through Lenovo, but that's ok, as the price is better by ordering one of the preconfigured models. Are most of the resellers about the same, or are there any I should be cautious of?

Both W7xx and W510 have had high gamut panel options for a long time. We recently received a batch of 15.6" (1920x1080p) 95% gamut panels (same model number as the 250$ upgrade option for the W510) and after some tests, the panels are very similar to the RGB LED found in W7xx, M6500, M17XR2, etc. I especially liked the color depth, 270nits brightness and very generous viewing angles.

Well I meant bringing the panels into the T series ThinkPads. That would equate Dell putting RGBLED into Latitudes. :D

The T510 with FHD uses the same panel as that on the W510.

T420 doesn't have any graphics options other than integrated Intel when I looked.

Then again, I went through the Contractor site. Prices seemed somewhat reasonable, but they could be different than just going through the standard site.

EDIT: Dell wants $100 for an upgrade from a 320GB to a 500GB hard drive on the E6420. There's a joke.
