So I've finally done a clean install and installed all the appropriate drivers and I LOVE THIS MACHINE SO FAR!!!

The only problem I've really had is the constant fan that's been on and the idle temps using CPUID have been 49-55. At times my nVidia NVS 4200m would become active and I thought it was becauase of that, at the time I really dont need it being active so I went to the BIOS and set all my display settings to Integrated only. BUT EVEN WHILE WRITING THIS THREAD OR BROWSING THE FORUMS MY IDLE TEMPS ARE STILL 49-55. Is this normal? My specs are listed below:

    i5-2540
    8gb memory
    Wins 7 Ultimate x64
    Intel Ultimate 6300
    nVidia NVS 4200m

Have many of you disabled your nvs 4200m as well?

Did you install the drivers from Windows Update, or did you use Lenovo's Thinkvantage System Update? The windows drivers tend to be a bit generic and aren't tailored to your Thinkpad. Use Lenovo's System update to download drivers, probably need to install their power manager, it is very good and could be the reason why the current power management isn't cutting it.

it's sound like your t420 is running at full power.. try installing lenovo's power manager and turn down the processor power and see if the fans still constantly running or not..

Have you installed Lenovo's Power Manager? This includes options to balance performance and fan activity.

However, I suspect that the underlying problem is the same as on my T420s, namely that the BIOS doesn't slow the fan down soon enough when the temperature drops. I hope Lenovo will address this in a BIOS update but, in the mean time, salvation is provided by TPFanControl. There is an updated version that is said to work better with the new Thinkpads here.

    Hey guys,

I have installed the PowerManager already and am using it. Can I get your screenshots of powermanager and settings you guys are currently using.

However, at first I did install drivers from system update but then realized that nVidia and Intel had updated drivers so I installed those drivers from their websites and deleted the ones that system updated had provided me with, other than that everythings the same.

    Thanks!
