I just upgraded by T420 to a powerfull i7 2720QM and this are my first impressions:
    Perfomance:

A nice improvement, for example now i can view qhd videos on youtube with 0 stops, fully smooth. Better multitasking perfomance.

    Temps:
This is the only one issue, when i fix freq to max (3.2ghz) , using high intensive cpu benchmarks like Cinebench 11.5 , the temp round 98º , i haven't reached 100º yet . This is not critical if you set freqs to dinamic set, in this case the temp maintains good ranges not reaching 90º.

    Power and battery:

You must run this processor using adaptor with 90w at least, with him no problems. I haven't test battery life yet.

    If you have any question....

that is asking for trouble. the CPU will survive but your motherboard components are going to melt.

Nah, it's fine. MBP's CPU's overheat to 100C on a regular basis and yet the failure rate is very low.

Considering the X220 actually reaches 100 degrees with the standard i7 I'd say it's looking good.

BTW, battery life will be about the same. The Quad Core only used 0.3W more power in idle.

I am more interested in the Quad possibilities of the T420 for now.
But anyway .. the T430 should have the same limitations regarding to QUAD: temp, power, etc... ??

T430 is interesting because there is a 35W Ivy Quad available.

    Yeah , i can have a deal on a T420 (1600x900, Nvidia) for 408$, the best price for T430 (non-nvidia) is around 1000$ ;-(
