I lost the T420s screen lottery and ended up with one of the AU screens. It is a terrible screen. I opened a customer service case number for the screen, but Lenovo is out of stock of replacement LCDs and the ETA on the backordered stock is September 19. That is after the 21 return period for the computer. I like the computer other than the screen and if the screen were to be replaced, I would love to keep the computer; however, I have no assurance that (a) Lenovo will replace the screen or (b) even if Lenovo replaces the screen that the replacement will be any better. What do you think I should do? Just return this one, wait, and reorder in the future if the screen quality increases? I got a pretty darn good deal on the computer, so if I return it now, I doubt I'll get as good of a deal in the future. One plus is that Lenovo is offering to wait the 15% restocking fee since the computer is "defective."

Somewhat related, is there any other 13'' or 14'' laptop that is light weight, has a good screen with minimum resolution greater than 1368x768, and is $1,500 or less? I know the Sony Z series is supposed to be good, but I do not have $2,000+ to spend.

Thanks so much in advance for your advice. A lot of folks have complained about the AU screen, but I do not think anyone has discussed this unique scenario or how to deal with requesting a replacement.

The screen is one of the most important elements of a notebook computer (to me). I would not keep a machine that had a screen I didn't like.

I don't think the LG and AUO have different.
Someone even said the AUO is better.

I have a T420s with the AOU screen and I'm not sure i could see any problems. I have pretty good vision and perhaps only if I look for the screen door effect from 1 inch away could I maybe make it out. How bad is it on your screen? How do you test for it? The AOU screen with mine isn't bad. The colors could be slightly more vibrant but I did some tweaks to the gamma settings and this helped.

I think perhaps the T420s isn't for you. As far as I've read here, the screen door effect is less pronounced on the AUO compared to the LG. There's also a Samsung screen but not so common.

I had problems with my T420s display as described in my review but the display is now quite acceptable. I think the action which made it usable was to drop the gamma to 0.8 (it's under the Intel graphics properties under color enhancement). So try adjusting gamma.
