I can't figure out what is causing this. Obviously if I shut the computer down it stops making any noise, but I usually just put it to sleep after work every day. After the lid is closed and the "Sleep" icon lights up, a constant high pitched whine starts coming from the underside of the laptop. This sound is not present when it is on and running normally, it just comes on in standby. Plus, I'm pretty sure that whatever is causing the sound is causing my battery to slowly run down when in sleep mode.

Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced this?

Hmm, I thought I was the only one that noticed that whine. It happens in Sleep/Standby mode on my X220T. I figured it was just the battery making noise since Sleep mode still has a very slight power draw. If you have ever plugged in an A/C adapter for a laptop without connecting it to anything then you would notice a whine inside of the power brick. I thought it was this same thing going on, but if anyone knows better for Sleep mode I would like to know as well.

    Confirm on W520 with i7-2720QM.

Never noticed it before; it seems to only be audible from the underside.

I should add that is exactly the case for me as well. Underside only. Sleep mode.
