My research in locating a laptop computer for our daughter going away to college this fall has been narrowed down to the IBM T43 2687D3U...still refining our research.

Question we have has to do with accessories. Does the T43 come standard with a 110 power supply or is this an extra cost item?

We have been unable to determine this from the various websites we have visited, such as CostCentral and IBM.

What are your thoughts about docking stations? Security will be an issue in the dorms and was thinking that a docking station will simplify things when our daughter returns to her room with the laptop and can just slide it into the docking station and lock it in without having to connect wires for the printer or whatever.

Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions.

I think a dock is usefull,as you say your daughter don't need connect the wires anymore, and the dock paired with t43 can extend the functions of the machine, but the noise of fan is a problem,if you are just worry about the security and the wries a minidock is a choice.

hey, first of all good choice for a laptop [ :)]

You do get a power adapter and plug, along with CDs, quick start guide and extra little red nubby things that act as the track point cover (they get dirty after a month or two and it's nice to be able to replace them).

You should definitely get a Kensington security lock for the laptop at the least in a dorm room, and a docking station would be extra nice since it adds easy security and ease of plugging in a mouse and external monitor if necessary. One caveat is if you daughter wants to use the desk for study and books, the docking station might get in the way. I wonder if this is something you wait a month for and see if she spends a lot of time in the dorm room or not, if she's there and studies a lot then a docking station makes sense. If the dorm room is loud and not conducive to work and she does work in a study room/library, it's not worth it, just get a lock.
