Is the Lenovo T60 that much of an improvement over the T43? I currently have an old T23 and am looking to upgrade. Could someone lay out which would be the better laptop to purchase. Thanks

    Basic difference:

    T60- Core Duo, T43- last model Pentium-M.

Assuming you enjoy multitasking and similar stuff, the T60 is superior.

Yeah, I went through that debate too. I actually went with the T43 because I found a good deal at the time and prefer the larger mouse buttons it has to the T60. I only ever do one thing at a time and don't multitask, I'm more efficient that way, so the T43 worked out for me. The Core Duo is a faster / better processor though.

The processor difference doesn't concern me too much as I have a desktop PC that I will be doing most of my encoding/cd burner applications. I was hoping that there was a another caveat with the two different models. The keyboard on my T23 is great and I enjoy typing on it. How do the keyboards compare? The T60 seems like a great machine so far though. With Vista right around the corner, I almost want to lean toward the T60 because of the graphics card. Is the build quality on par?

Here are the differences that I noticed in the couple days I had a 14" t43 and t60 sitting next to one another. Both had the NMB keyboard, and they felt exactly the same to me. The build quality was very close; the t60 frame might even have seemed a bit stiffer. The t60's touchpad and touchpad buttons were a bit smaller than the t43's. I didn't like this so much - I think they were both a little too small, but it wasn't a big deal for me, especially since I usually use the trackpoint. The t60 has a little switch on the front of the computer that turns the wireless on/off that I found handy.

The biggest difference to me, though, was the heat. The t60 was noticeably cooler at all times, and the fan came on less frequently. If I were deciding between the two, I'd probably get a t60 for this reason. Both are good computers though, I don't think you can go wrong between the two.

The keyboards are essentially the same, but just as with the T43, manufacturer varies, so you may get one you don't like as much.

The T60's fan barely ever comes on, actually (just rambling and confirming Jmmmmm's statement).

The fan comment is reassuring to me. I've been reading the graphics card on the T60 gets quite hot and the fan never stops. I'm kind of a noise freak and this would bother me I imagine.

How about the screen? are they similar? I think the screen of T43 is kind of same as T21 which I have, right!!

I have a T43 and I would suggest buying a T60. You will get lot's of fan noise with the T43. If fan noise is a problem for you. Go to your doctor and ask for a perscription for Luvox. Luvox works well for people with obsessive compulsive disorder.

Well, I wouldn't go as far to say that I have OCD. It's just the fact that when I'm in a library typing, the fan can get annoying. I like having a certain level of silence when I'm writting an essay. That being said, I'll probably go with the T60.

At first I could only imagine going through Lenovo to buy a T60 whereas I could get a T43 anywhere. Now I see there are a couple of sites that you can buy a T60 without paying tax on it. My main concern with the entire ordeal was trying to figure out if Lenovo kept up the same quality control that IBM has had.

If all you're worried about is quality, I'd say, just get it. I've got a T30, T42 and my new T60, and the new Thinkpad feels as strong, as well-built and as good as my older Thinkpads. I don't even know why I deviated and bought a HP and a Fujitsu 6 and 4 years ago respectively...

I have yet to hear the fan on my Thinkpad, even when running benchmarks. I suppose it's probably because I've yet to try it out in a library or someplace quiet, but under normal working conditions, there's almost no noise (or heat) issues.

Like I said, if a person is obsessive compulsive, fan noise will be a problem. As Rainman indicated, it's not a problem for him. Thus, no need for Luvox for Ramian. The T60 is your best choice.
