At the moment there is a special offer on T43s (here in Australia). Link here.

Anyway, it sounds like a pretty good deal for $AUD1,799.00:

    T43:
    Processor
    Intel® Pentium® M Processor 750 1.86 GHz

    Notebook memory
    1GB RAM

    Hard drive
    80GB, 5400RPM

    Optical device
    DVD Recordable

    Display
    14.1" XGA

    Wireless
    Intel® PRO/Wireless 3945ABG

    Graphics
ATI Mobility Radeon X300 64MB VRAM

    Weight
    2.2kg

    Others
Fingerprint Reader, Bluetooth Antenna, Security Chip, UltraNav, Gigabit Ethernet, 6 Cell Battery

This seems to be much more price competitive that the availale T60 models. Should I snatch up this deal, or pay (a lot) more for a comparable T60 in your opinions? Where is the difference?

    Thanks,
    Luke

NO T43, buy a T60. It is on sale now.

Perhaps it's not on sale in Australia.

Depends what you will be doing with this notebook. The processor will be the main difference. If you need more power for demanding tasks, go for the T60, but if the price difference is more than 50%, i'd say the T43 will be good. Excellent build and keyboard.

Is that a new laptop or refurbished? How much is the T60 costing in Australia?

The laptop is new (both T43 and T60), and it will be used for a little bit of everything. However I have a great desktop so mainly I need a laptop with decent battery, thats pretty light and can play a basic game or two.

Anyway a T60 with the following specs costs $AUD2,932.99:
    Intel® Core Duo processor T5600 1.83GHz
    14.1" XVGA
    1024x768
    Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950
    ThinkPad 11a/b/g Wireless LAN
    1GB Memory
    80GB Harddrive
    Bluetooth
    Fingerprint Reader

So I will be losing out on an X300 (no option to include a VGA in customization), but I will get a better processor.

    What do you think?

That DVD Recordable on the T43 is a 2X burner without multilayer support, I believe. It sucks.

you'll get 8x on the T60 supermultiburner. To upgrade the T43 will cost an extra US$259

That is expensive for the specs you get. For the ~$1200 difference, i'd say the T43 is a better buy all-around.

There are some applications like Photoshop which will be faster on the Core Duo. The Intel 950 card will have better battery life as well

I don't think that is enough to justify a $1000 US though, the OP could purchase a desktop for the photoshop and such with the saved money.

To each his/her own. I can rationalize a lot if I want it. It's tough to carry a desktop.

Ofcourse, that is human nature, we rationalize almost all of our purchases, as a great portion (our 'wants') are unnecessary to continue living a stable and confortable life.

Well it has come down to 1700 for the T43 or 3000 for the T60.

Both have 1GB memory, a 14.1" screen and a dvd burner. The T60 has integrated graphics (which is a bonus for me, as it will save battery) and a core duo at 2.83Ghz. The T43 on the other hand has an Intel® Pentium® M Processor 750 1.86 GHz.

    Any last words?

I am in the same situation and haven't been able to decide whether to go for T43 ($AU1,710.50) or T60 ($AU3,299.00) with ATI X1400. If I opt for T43 I can save quite a lot of money and I can buy a brand new Core 2 Duo desktop.

However, does anyone know when Core Duo (not Core 2 Duo) will be on sale any time soon?

    Thank you.

To both of you, as i've said in the past, the T43 will fulfill both your needs.
Envisage, the graphics card alone shouldn't make or break your decision. You'll notice 5 - 6 mins of extra battery time with integrated, chances for choppy sequences, a hard time w/ Aero Vista and an inferior card all around.

Those prices are ludicrous. Lenovo was selling the T43 on sale in canada this summer for $1299 92u model, which had Pentium 2.0 ghz, flexview, dvd burner, bluetooth. Or the 72u model for $1199 (14" form factor without flexview).

    2686M4U for $999 and 2686M5U for $1,099.

Those i mentioned were back to school specials, being built from leftover parts, and are no more left.
