I'm not an expert on computers but i've been doing a lott of research lately b/c I need a computer for college.

So I was thinking T430 or Y480. Can you guys give me any opinions with reasons?

I was leaning towards T430 because of it's long battery life and since I don't play high end games. But I do watch movies like any other college student and listen to music. I also plan on using it for 4 years.

The price for y480 is 799 before tax
The price for t430 is 1133 before tax

I am in desperate need for help. thank you guys!

For a college student I would go with the T430. Stronger, 900p screen, etc. The screens on the Ideapads are just awful and a cheap set of speakers will outshine the JBL speakers on the y480. What are the specs on the T430? If you're a student, sign up for the Barnes and Noble Gold account to save even more.

Based on durability and better keyboard in the Thinkpad line I would go with T430 since you are not going to be doing that much gaming although HD4000 would be capable of gaming on newer titles at lower settings. Have you checked out Lenovo higher education discount (also wait for some good promo codes)?

I would drop the i7 and get a slightly slower i5 as it will save you a lot of money. Unless you really need all the CPU you can get.

I'd get t430 just because of the magnesium honey comb structure alone. Plus, you're not interest in game I see no reason to hesitate. It's also has nicer looking and a good red nub pointer which I really love after I use thinkpad.

If I drop to i5 I'd be getting
Intel Core i5-3360M Processor (3M Cache, up to 3.50 GHz)
    Is that still ivy bridge?

Good choice there, that i7 option is not a quad core so it is definitely not worth the money to upgrade.
