    T430s "popped" and won't turn on

    Hello all, turned on my t430s started doing some basic work. Less than 5 minutes after turning it on, I heard a pop and laptop shut off. No power or any lights with the a.c. plugged in or the battery.

    I pulled the battery and psu and held the power button for 10 seconds then retried to start the laptop with both plugged in. Still nothing.

    PSU on the voltmeter showed 20.1v DC, so that looks to be in spec with the 20v label. Battery was 86% and charging at the time.

    Any ideas besides a fried laptop?

    Usually a loud pop is a capacitor blowing. They a bit fiddly to replace, but still doable if you have a decent soldering iron. You can try to find the culprit yourself and replace it, or find a board repair centre to do it for you. That will be cheaper than a new motherboard.

    Okay so I need to go out and get a magnifying glass to check the very small capacitors. In the meantime I took a voltmeter to the charging port on the laptop (daughter board?) and I got the 20.1~3 v throughout the different modules on it by itself. But when I plug the daughter board into the main mother board and recheck the same components, plus additional ones on the motherboard, and the battery charging terminals they all read between 1.4-3.4v instead of 20.1

    I know almost nothing about electricity and circuits. But would that confirm that there is a bad capacitor or a short on the motherboard?
