The silver hinges that connect screen and the body of the laptop are broken. Now when I open up the screen it can't stand by itself. I have to put something behind the screen for it to lean on... Out of a thousands ways I imagine my laptop would fail me this never comes to me yet it happened anyways... I tried calling Lenovo. Since my warranty expired, the representative had no idea about the cost and said I need to send it to the depot to evaluate the repair cost. Does anybody here have an idea how much it approximately should cost? Can I bring it to a local repair shop? Thanks!

Diy is $12 + time (an hour, say). Shop could do it for ~$50, or thereabouts.

The answer to this question will largely depend on your location.

Depending on how (in)competent the shop staff is...but swapping hinges on a ThinkPad is not the most difficult thing in the world.

I would say do it yourself. If you don't want to deal with hinges and taking apart the LCD, you can just buy the whole LCD assembly on ebay and swap it in. Not really a difficult job, just go slow and be patient.

Wow thanks for all the replies.

I called Staples after posting this. The guy told me the cost is $370... I was so disappointed that I started researching for new laptop right away after the call... Your answers save my life (and lots of money).

I looked at some tutorial on youtube. Seems like I can buy the hinges from ebay, then with some screwdrive and patience I can do the replacement myself? I'm never good at craftsmanship I even have to borrow a screwdriver from others. I wonder if there is something that can be easily overlooked / I should be extra careful about? Just want to make sure I do this right. Thanks again!

    o_O !!!

Sure, you can diy. Don't even need to disconnect the lcd cable, only take care not to flex that too much; the wires inside are eerily thin and can't deal with sharp angles/bends. Same applies to the front bezel; pretty thin plastic, so don't use too much force. If one section is difficult, start at the other end, where it may be easier to unclip. Check some YouTube videos on ' lcd replacement', brand and type are irrelevant, the general idea is the same for pretty much every laptop.
