I really hope that this is not the case. I was under the impression that one of the improvements was the rapid charge option. Since it wasn't even mentioned at all in the customization page I thought it would be a built in feature.

Also hoping this isn't the case. Can't find any documentation on special RapidCharge batteries and they weren't an option for me...

    It might be the case...
The online chat have no idea...and give me the information that rapid charges should have SSD drive...
And give the tech support number from Lenovo:
    800-426-7378

Spoke to IBM/Lenovo support in Atlanta. According to them, the AC adapter itself is special, not the battery. According to the guy I spoke to, all batteries sold with the T430s are RapidCharge compatible, with the AC adapter being the key to the implementation. This jives with rumors that the new batteries have chips on-board, which could certainly aid in something like RapidCharge.

That wasn't the case with the original X1 from last year that introduced the RapidCharge feature.

The 4 cell polymer battery was special but you could use nearly any ThinkPad AC adapter to charge it. I used the 90W and 135W adapters on the test unit I had.

I mean, all I can go by right now is what I've heard and read. It seems equally likely that it works in the way you've described...

Once I've got hardware to experiment with I'll update with more...

Given all the talk about the authentication and security features apparently in the power components of the new ThinkPads, it would not surprise me to learn that you can only use a certified T430S battery and charger. Seems unlikely considering past history, but a change would not surprise me.
