I am looking to install an SSD drive in my Thinkpad T440 (not T440s), it currently has a 500gb HDD and a 16GB M.2 cache.

    My questions:

    1. Can I buy a regular 2.5" 7mm laptop SSD and install it in this Thinkpad?
    2. I haven't really kept up with HDD technology, I don't understand at all how the M.2 cache fits into everything. Do I have to buy an M.2 SSD?
    3. If I can just use a regular 2.5" SSD, can I remove the M.2 cache because it won't be necessary anymore?

I'd really appreciate any explanations or ideas. Thanks.

    1) Yes.

    2) No. If you're interested in the SSD, you're much better off with a "conventional" one. M2 - especially in the 42mm guise that Lenovo uses - has ways to go.

    3) Yes.

    Huh...ZaZ beat me to it...LOL

    Thanks guys.

Do I need to do anything in the BIOS, or do I just pull out the old HDD and M.2 and install the SSD in the 2.5" bay?

I never did find anything about the cache in the BIOS - it seems to be limited to a program or driver that's installed in Windows. I simply pulled the stock HDD, put in an SSD, installed Windows (but not the cache program), and formatted the M.2 drive. I use the M.2 for the pagefile and other crap now. I suppose pulling the M.2 might cause the laptop to draw a little less power, but other than that, I see no reason to bother pulling it.
