Hi, I'm trying to get wireless n working on my t440p.

I have the default "Thinkpad bgn" network adapter, which claims to support the n standard. I cannot see any 5Ghz networks when connecting the usual way.

I just updated to the newest drivers, listed here on the lenovo site:
    http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/gjwx04ww.txt

    Windows 8.1 64bit.

I really need this working since the 2.4GHz band in my apartment is so saturated it is essentially unusable. I was just going to buy an Intel wifi card but apparently Lenovo locks down the bios to prevent that?

I'm going to venture a guess that the 5Ghz band is not supported at all, and that the "N" aspect of the card works only in 2.4 range.

As for the locked BIOS: the machine is recent enough that it should support *lenovo-issued* Intel cards even up to 7260AC, but they *must* have a proper FRU number on them, otherwise a modded BIOS will be required for a generic card to operate.

    Good luck.

I hope this is just driver issue. I can't believe Lenovo would sell ThinkPad in 2014 without 5G support. If so, then back on trees gentlemen.

It's not a driver issue, and it's not a fly by night scheme of Lenovo's. A lot of current WLAN cards rely exclusively on the 2.4 GHz frequency. As Dragnoak mentioned, B/G/N standards don't tout 5 GHz support, only A and AC protocols do.

Yep. How do I put this...
    b/g is 2.4GHz only
    a/ac is 5GHz only
And 5GHz can always do 2.4GHz, sometimes 5GHz

I never thought of 5GHz as being important until I moved into a dorm at uni. 2.4GHz works here, but is much slower than what I got at home. 5GHz works fine though.
