I just got my T440p (i7-4800MQ - 16Gb RAM - 512 Samsung 840 Pro SSD - FHD screen - 9 cell battery - Win 8.1 x64), I'l try to take some pictures later but for now I'll leave my initial reaction overall.
I'm coming from a HP Elitebook 8440p (had it for close to 4 years, probably used it +8h a day) so my reaction is probably biased towards comparing the T440p to my elitebook. Anyway here it goes:
The good
- Personally I like the design and feel of the materials the make up the outer body. The "matte" look of the shell is awesome imo. For a business latop it's as discret as they come.
- Considering the size and weight of the laptop, the performance/portability racio is very good (in the 14'' range), even with the 9 cell battery it's still ligther (though not by much ~2.2 Kg vs 2.3 Kg) than my elitebook.
- Overall sturdiness, the thing just looks and feels compact and tough
- The IPS screen is super bright, in dark rooms I have to keep it at 25-40 % to even be able to look at it without hurting my eyes, which for using the laptop outside is excellent.
The bad
- Lighbleed. It could be my panel but you can clearly see lightbleed on startup but only if you're in a dark room, with ambient light it becomes unoticeable (at least to me). Also when you open or close the screen you can clearly notice the pressure effect on the lightbleed. Just put small pressure on the screen edges or the backplate and see the screen bleed light all over the place (doesn't take much pressure, just enough for a grip to open or close the screen).
- The plastic of the main surface (where you actually rest your hands on) and screen edge has a different feel than the material used on the outside (backplate and on the lid), it's more rough, feels cheaper. I would very much have preffered if they the plamrest and screen edge had the feel of the outside material.
- Maybe this is usual in Lenovo but why the hell do I have to do a key combo to hit pause/break? I understand not having a numlock key (cause hey, no numpad!) but removing pause/brealk?
- F-keys, they are called F-keys not "Multimedia" keys or "Laptop control" keys... why oh why are the F symbols so damn small like they are a secondary function of the key? They are the primary function! By default when I hit F1 I want F1 to be registered not "Mute". Anyway you get my point right? FnLck should have been reversed and F symbols should have taken front-stage on the key
- Why no capslock status LED? Glaring omission imo.
The ugly
- I don't know if with other keyboard layouts is the same (I have a portugues layout) but the key symbols have a horrible layout. I'll put a picture later but for example each number key has all 3 symbols in a single row with the number in the middle. I can touch type so it's not really a big issue but it looks horrible (and makes it much harder to interpret the symbols). I like much more my elitebook layout where they put a symbol on each key corner, the number being on the lower left corner.
- This is a minor look pet peeve but because of the slant the keys adjacent to the trackpoint have, the letter on the key immediately below the trackpoint is every so slightly moved downwards and therefore not aligned with the rest of the keys of that row. It looks weird to me, I wonder if the slant could have been smaller so the letter could be printed in the right position...
- The whole laptop especially the keys, is very prone fingerprint "stains", in the "right" light it makes the laptop look very dirty.
Other stuff
- I didn't mention the trackpad because I'm still getting used to it. I miss the left/right keys I had in my elitebook when using the trackpoint but I think it's a matter of time until I grow used to the new system. Only time will tell.
- I also seen complains about the lack of wifi or HDD light. Honestly it doesn't bother me, I can see when WiFi is on or not when it matters (when the screen is on). As for the HDD light, I guess you could miss it in times where you're not really sure if something is happening (oh yeah, I/O stop-the-world process ongoing) but nowadays, with SSDs and Win 8 detail taskmanager. I can do without the HDD light
- Another LED related matter I've seen is the charging feedback, but the dot on the i of "Thinkpad" lights up at first when charging so that's not really an issue (and again, just opening the screen for a few seconds gives you feedback on whether or not charging is happening)
In the coming days I'll try to put a mini-review with some pictures.

I am looking to get a similar version with the i7-4800MQ, FHD and 9-cell battery. What worries me with this version is battery life and portability-bulkiness-thickness for the t440p . I'm glad to hear performance/portability is okay.
What kind of battery life are you getting with the 9 cell?
Pictures would be great -
I've got the 6 cell (and the rest of the stuff in my signature) and I think I can get about 5 hours of battery out of it...... (and that's from not really trying, just leaving it in the balanced profile)
Here's a shot of the thickness of it (and the ultrabay caddy) -
Love the machine, except the keypad which i think i will get accustom to it. Coming from VAIO Z2.

Some benchmarks that will be in the upcoming review of T440p on Notebookcheck.

Wait, there is no native F keys on the T4x0 series? And no capslock light?
Can the former be set in the BIOS?
Thats wierd, my Y series has both of those are is far from a business laptop
Lenovo, what have you been smoking? -
That's a nice clean look with the Ultrabay.
-
It seems that if you don't have some keyboard driver installed, it defaults to F-Lock on (so my f-keys work like f-keys) if I want to change volume or whatever I have to hold the fn key as well.. I don't know what utility changes it, but it's working like I'd hoped it would... the only odd thing is that my f-lock light stays on.. but that's ok...
And, yes, there is no caps-lock light (I think there's an on-screen notification though, but again since I didn't install whatever utility controls that, I don't see it)
I wish I had a way to find how long I've been on battery....
Since the last time I was plugged in (Saturday morning) I have...
1 - Programmed and debugged through a universal remote for my parents (a mx-780 for those who are curious) that took about 1.5 hrs (maybe more)
2 - Did some actual work (using vs.net 2013 and intellij 13 - yes.. it's a combined java and c# project) on Sunday for about 2 hours
3 - Browsed amazon and such some on Sunday night (about 30 mins)
4 - Been working this morning for 30 minutes so far and I'm currently at 32% remaining...
This is all with the 6 cell battery.... I think I could reasonably get 6 hours from it.... -

I installed windows 8 first then had to let it do it's update thing (I did have to install the wireless driver at this point to be able to get updates and such - I didn't check if the wired connection was working) then after win 8 did it's updates I upgraded to 8.1 and have just selectively installed lenovo things that I thought I needed -
Was that a retail install?
Did your laptop come with a Windows CoA sticker and number that you then used? (I understand that not all of them come with stickers.) -
I bought it with win 8 pro (so the license is actually in the bios).. it's also on a sticker that's on the memory slots (if I remember right)... but yeah that usb thing was basically the retail install (it was downloaded from MS.. I don't remember exactly the steps, but it was an installer that allows creation of media) - I originally tried to use that to install win 8 on my m6600 using the uefi..
BTW uefi boot is really cool compared to the "legacy" boot modes -
Hi guys,
Congratulations for you new T440p.
If I can join the discussion, you can check a first group of pictures by following this link.
I have the same config as blackspawn. The T440p is really easy to open and change hard drive or RAM. Just 2 screws to remove to access to RAM and one more to switch the hard drive. I will make a picture about the T440p once it's open.
Before the T440p, I get the T430. After a few days, I'm really happy with this new machine. The most positive point for me is the new trackpad which is really good and smart. On the T430, the trackpad was really too small and I did not like the "dot" on the pad. My main worry was also the heat dissipation, for now I get no problem with the T440p with the fan noise or temperature. I installed TCPfan and when I do nothing the tempoerature is arround 55°c max. In most cases, the fan is off. For me the only moment it's start it's when I start my VM. So, normal.
Some positive points :
- Good Lenovo keyboard
- Really improved trackpad, which it's really important (for me)
- Really a nice finishing
- Perfect size to be transportable but also powerfull (I need to create a lot of virtual machines for my work)
- Really beautiful screen HD
Some negatives points :
- F functions are now the first choice for the F1, F2, F3... Don't like so much this.
- No probem with the fact there is now "no" lights at all. But, just a light for the caps lock would be perfect.
- Don't like that there is now "no" lock button to open/close the laptop. It's just magnet.
- 9-cells battery... but no option for 6-cell in France when I ordered (strange)
Average point :
- Don't understand the "red light" on the back of the screen. It's useless. But ok, I can live this this.
I'm looking for a case for this new laptop. Do you have some advices ? Like this type of case : http://www.mac4ever.com/dossiers/74242_la-robe-de-be-ez but only for Apple computers. And don't know what size to choose with the 9-cells. Maybe someone can helpbuckling spring likes this. -
Nice pictures akril, I forgot to bring my camera for Xmas so I'll only be able to take pics somedays after sandy claws comes to visit
.
Been using it for a couple of days now so I've built a more solid opinion
- Other that the symbols (alluded to earlier in my post) I'm loving this keyboard, the key touch, the sligthly concave shape, the depression resistance, the sound... it's the best keyboard I've ever typed on!
- The trackpad is also very good, I was used to a miniscule trackpad in my elitebook, this is a very nice upgrade. Multitouch works very well, and to be honest I like much more the way this touchpad clicking works (whole trackpad moves downwards with a very "muffled" click) vs how the macbook trackpad works (hard click and only where you click moves downwards).
- Using the trackpoint is a little weird because you do not get touch feedback from the thumb when placed over the "virtual" trackpoint buttons on the touchpad. It's very easy for your thumb to "move around" either moving towards me or to the middle button which causes a lot of misclicks (at least in my experience).
- Noticed that "mute" and "microfone off" (and "fn lock") have status lights on the keys used to toggle them, why they choose no to have one for capslock or wifi is beyond me...
- Regarding heat, I haven't really pushed it to the limits yet (been busy installing software and moving stuff from my old elitebook) but I've noticed that when temps reach about 70 degrees the fan kicks in and is clearly audible, below that either it's off or is completly silent.
- I have a nine cell battery and using normal browsing with WiFi (downloading a lot), copying files, installing a lot of software and a few reboots I got about 7 h battery time
One thing (not so nice) that I noticed is the the plastic frame (around the keyboard and trackpad) is a single piece that sits on top of the body frame. The issue is that the edges of that piece are cleary noticeable to the touch when you pass your finger on the sides of the laptop (the whole piece seems to be slightly larger in width/length that the frame that it sits upon). Although it appears securely fastened you you pick up by holding the side it feels like if your not careful the whole pice will detach itself from the laptop's body.... Also there a very small "gap" between it and the body frame (if you look at an angle on the side that has the power button you can even see it's light escaping throught that small space). -
Honestly, dare i say it, i personally prefer Lenovo's new chiclet keyboard over the traditional one. I prefer typing on my Y410 than L420, i make far less mistakes on the chiclet board, possibly thanks to the concave shape. However, having typed on a T430s, the experience was superior to both my Y410 and L420.

the Bios controls which takes precedence. -
-
Was able to wait for UPS today so have my T440p (4700MQ, FHD, 7260AC). First impressions are mixed and I'll post more later, but for now...
The good:
- Nice build quality, size and design. I like the more minimalist look and it has a smaller footprint than my T420 (and is about the same thickness)
- Great keyboard, even compared to my previous Thinkpad.
- Generally quiet and cool (though it's hard to tell in the first hour).
- Nice big trackpad that's a world away from the tiny rough affair on my T420.
- Very bright screen with great viewing angles and colors.
The not so good:
- That infamous light bleed on the screen - I have a big patch top left and some smaller areas, which show on startup and when viewing a black video. To be honest, however, I cannot see how this machine can not have light bleed because the lid is so flexy and even moving it slightly causes new areas of bleed to show up. The problem IMO is simply that the screen support and bezel are not stiff enough.
- The fan does seem hyperactive. In the first 15 minutes of the machine being on, for example, the fan seemed to hit every speed at some point (including one low-medium speed when it makes a strange growling noise)
- The clackpad is a bit clacky and detracts from the overall feeling of build quality, but I tend to use tap-to-click so I;m not too bothered.
- When closed the lid sorta flops around when I pick the machine up by the hinge-side, which is slightly disconcerting. It would be nice to have a more solid-feeling closure system.
- Windows 8
Overall I'm not sure exchanging the machine is gonna fix the screen bleed issue so I might simply live with it (and hope it doesn't impinge on my photo editing). Anyone other owners got any thought on these screen issues? -
Below are my overall impressions with the T440p; your T440p may not exhibit some of the issues I detail. Any comparisons to the T420 are due to that model being my most recent ThinkPad.
Config: i5-4200; 12 GB RAM (4 GB + 8 GB); Samsung 840 Pro SSD; NVIDIA 730M; HD+ display (Innolux N140FGE-EA2); Intel 7260 BT/AC; Smart Card; Windows 7 Pro.
DISPLAY
- No dead or stuck pixels.
- No light bleed.
- No "screen door" effect or sparkly coating.
- Very bright at max brightness, decent color but slightly washed out with a minor bluish tint. I've corrected this by using custom color profiles.
- Viewing angles are on par with other non-IPS panels I've used.
- Probably the best out-of-the-box ThinkPad display I've seen.
KEYBOARD
- Very little flex, even near the optical drive area.
- Pleasant to type on, keys feel "springy" and responsive.
- I find the backlit keyboard distracting, as the light bleeds from the top rows and my eyes pick it up constantly; I prefer the ThinkLight. Also, you have to manually engage the backlight; it does not remember its state between boots.
- I do not like the lack of dedicated mute and volume buttons; a big minus.
- User must manually switch the F-keys (Fn + Esc) from media controls to Functions manually; not hard, but hate this trend.
- No Break button.
- Tab key is very "clackety".
- Absolutely hate the shape of the Escape and Delete keys; the position of the latter is also poor. I frequently hit Insert by mistake.
- Very little space between clusters of F-keys, hard for fingers to differentiate.
- Fingerprint/skin oil magnet; keys can become very dirty-looking, fast.
TRACKPAD
- Spacious, but feels cheap.
- Useful Apple-like gestures.
- Noisy when clicking.
- I miss separate hardware buttons.
CHASSIS
- Sturdy-feeling except for the lid, which is much flimsier-feeling than the T420's lid; the lid is also "floppier", closer to a MacBook lid than a T-series lid.
- No latch to secure the lid in place; a minus.
- Rough, unfinished-feeling plastic edge where palm rest joins with bottom chassis.
- Power button behaves more like a capacitive touch button than a physical one; hard to tell you're pushing it.
- Lack of traditional LED indicators; the "i" in ThinkPad on the lid illuminates red when powered on or charging. I didn't find this to be much of a loss.
- Very easy to add memory or change hard drive.
- Fingerprint magnet, makes the laptop look like it's a floor model at a Best Buy; a minus.
- Speaker placement is a bit odd.
HEAT & NOISE
- The left side of the keyboard nearest to the cooling fan gets extremely warm when doing anything CPU/GPU intensive, using either the integrated or discrete graphics, with the latter getting even warmer.
- Noise level is about the same as the T420 under load, and just like that model, the fan seems to come on randomly; for example, I'm typing this list in Notepad++ and the fan kicked on. Whaaaa?
- Fan noise is noticeable, but fortunately is not high-pitched or whiny. Fan is quite loud when gaming, as would be expected.
PERFORMANCE & BATTERY LIFE
- Overall performance is what you'd expect; with the SSD, it's wicked fast.
- In terms of gaming, the only game I play is World of Warcraft. I'm getting 90-100 fps outside of raids, 45-50 fps during, and the same in heavily populated cities. Settings are native res with 4x AF, Textures at High, View Distance and Environment Detail at Ultra, Fair Water, and Fair Particle Density. I'm having some trouble getting used to the new keyboard layout for keybinds.
- Speakers can get quite loud, but the sound coming from the front of the computer takes some getting used to. Decent range for laptop speakers -- there's a least some bass response.
- Haswell battery life doesn't seem that impressive; I'm seeing roughly the same life I did out of the 6-cell in my T420. The lack of a battery slice option is also a hindrance to me, for both the extra juice and the better typing angle.

@pipspeak,
could you check which screen your T440p has? Because some T440s owners have received their machines with an LG AH-IPS screen instead of the AUO AHVA screen, see: http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo/734969-t440s-owner-s-thread-69.html#post9503937 Maybe your T440p has this screen as well. -
-
How can you tell which screen? HWinfo doesn't seem to have any info...
hardware id: LEN40A3
Monitor Name: LP140WF1-SPK1
Btw, I'm very pleased with this display... I used my dell a little bit the other day and the first thing I notice is how washed out that display looks..
-
So, you have the LG AH-IPS display as well. Accoring to the other user with this display, it has a "sparcle" effect and light-bleed, and worse colors than the AUO screen.
I would call Lenovo and ask them to replace the Display. Tell them they should replace the LG screen with the one from AUO (04X0436) -
The lid of my machine also flops around rather alarmingly when closed. The advantage is that I can open it with one hand, but I'd rather have slightly stiffer hinges that actually keep the lid closed more firmly. -
Just checked mine and it's also a LEN40A3 (FHD) and I also have lightbleed...
-
"LEN40A3" says nothing. You have to find out the name of the display panel, you have either the LP140WF1-SPK1 from LG or the B140HAN01.2 from AUO.
@pipspeak,
you have to tell them the right FRU. -
If you can;t find the name of the display panel from the Device Manager, you can download a free trial of a program called AIDA64, a system info tool. Just uninstall it when/if you no longer need it.
-
I'll try to be more critical of the display, but at this point, it's not worth it to switch it.. the only time I see any light bleed is on the bios / uefi start with the white Lenovo logo (and I believe the screen is at 100% brightness)
I also don't see any sparkle effects or anything else... -
Anyway, just like unferth33, I too only notice it on boot so it no big deal. -
In the meantime I'd be interested if anyone could provide a link to measurements for the LG panel. -
I really dislike how quickly the palm rest and keys look "dirty" after just a short while of use. My hands were washed and dried thoroughly, yet the keyboard and wrist area looks like this laptop was a floor display model that a thousand people have poked around on.
-
I can handle the flexy lid if my display is relatively uniform without the large light-bleed patches I have now. However, it baffles me why Lenovo doesn't have the same carbon-fiber lid in the T440p that they have in the T440s.
@unlucky... how "floppy" is your display when closed? If you grab the machine by its spine and shake it, for example, does the lid kinda flap open and closed a few inches on its own? -
Hence, which screen is less likely to have the lightbleed issue? the HD+ or the FHD?
Thank you -
I'm planning to upgrade the memory from 8GB into 16GB. See below current setup (by CPU-Z):
As per photo, original memory specs seems to be:
- 2x4GB DDR3-1600 PC3-12800 11-11-11-28 1.35V
Which 16GB memory kit you would recommend? Original Lenovo 8GB memories are out of question as those are way too expensive.
Would it be okay install example 2x8GB DDR3-1866 10-10-10-30 1.35V kit, even though bios doesn't have overclocking options? Or is it better to find set with exact specs? -
9, 10, or 11 will all work. Lower numbers will be a little faster.
Here are 9 choices with free shipping. -
HD+ is only a TN screen, FHD is IPS. TN screens normally are worse than IPS one though there are exceptions. The TN screen on my T430 sucks.
It seems lightbleeding on IPS screens (especially when you just power on the computers) are fairly common. I saw it on my X220 but it did not both me at all. I would have been bothered if the lightbleeing were still there when watching video, though. -
Does anyone have any experience with the Hard Drive Adapter (for the ultrabay) for this model. I got one to put my factory Hard Drive in, but it's WAY too loose (there's a solid 1/4" of space around the hard drive, just lightly tapping it disconnects it. I called IBM and they said it should all be compatible, and the only thing they can do is let me return the caddy. Are any of the third party ones that are available any good?
Picture of looseness: Lenovo HDD Caddy - Imgur -
Re: "floppy" lid, I detect zero slop in the lid when closed. Hinges are nice and tight. Whether they would still be tight in two years is an open question. -
Anyone got a WWAN card yet? Is it region locked (The ATT one)? Is the verizon one GSM compatible?
-
In the end I just put scotch tape around the edge of the harddrive and it hasn't moved in years. -
Starting to have wifi problems on the 7260 AC card. I am getting random disconnects.
I customized some of the wifi card properties, such as always prefer 2.4 GHz, etc, since I have an Apple Airport Extreme router, and sometimes Windows wifi cards go nuts due to the dual-band (despite this card being such), but it's not helping. There is currently only one driver available at Lenovo's site. I'm downloading the latest driver direct from Intel, and although it's not as new, I'm hoping it will fix the issue. -
-
I just noticed that there is no Intel wifi option when you try and configure a T440p. Only the standard wifi is available. -
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk -
Even with everything disabled in the BIOS except for wifi and USB, integrated graphics set as the default, and the screen at 6 brightness, Power Manager is reporting only 4 to 4.5 hours of battery on a 100% charge. Haswell is supposed to be a battery wizard, but I am not impressed.
